Kia ora e te Woodleigh whanau

Kia ora e te Woodleigh whānau, welcome to our pānui for week four of Term three. The weather has certainly got a little cooler for the start of this month with some very good frosts which our tamariki love to find around the school and call ‘snow’. Hopefully as we move closer to September, we will see the warmth return and not as much ‘snow’ around the kura.

Our classrooms are humming with excitement as we work on our topics. The Kowhai team continues to look at the stone age and dinosaur age and I am always fascinated with our learners' ability to name all the dinosaurs! Our Kahikatea team have been deepening their learning about ancient Egypt and recently the hieroglyphics (writing) of this time. The Totara team are delving deep into what makes a good business idea and what are good and services.

Last Friday our Netball A team played in the New Plymouth Principal Association/Whiria sports finals against Oakura School. This was a rematch of our earlier game we had with them in Term 2. The team played really well, the score was 14 - 13 to Woodleigh! I want to thank super coach Mrs Creery.

It is also a great opportunity to thank all our parents who have given up their time to be sports coaches. We have a great number of tamariki involved in school and club netball, miniball, rugby, football, league and hockey teams during Term 2 and 3. Ka mau te wehi whanau we appreciate all the time you give to our tamariki in your coaching role!

Our tamariki are enjoying their cross country training. Term 3 is always a busy term of running and getting ourselves ‘running fit’ for the school, New Plymouth and Taranaki cross country events. We are working on some fun activities as part of the school cross country this year. It will be held again at Sutherland park on Wednesday 26 August (back up day is the 27th). More information will be coming home next week about this event.

Nga mihi whanau

Mr O and the Woodleigh team.

On Wednesday we have our Parent assembly, this assembly is also our mihi whakatau for our new learners to Woodleigh. We really enjoy sharing the tikanga of welcoming new whanau to Woodleigh, and we add our special part of this mihi.

We begin this assembly at 9am. If you are coming to the assembly and do not have a new learner beginning, then please sit along the back wall of the hall. We keep the seats on the right reserved for our new tamariki and whanau as part of the mihi whakatau.

We are looking forward to welcoming our new whanau to Te kura o Woodleigh.

A big thanks to everyone for calling, HERO messaging or texting the school if your child(ren) are away from school. Thanks also to our whanau who have let us know if you are going away during term time. A reminder that at Woodleigh School, regular attendance helps children feel settled, build friendships, and keep up with their learning. Each day at school builds on the day before, and even short absences can make it harder for children to stay confident and connected in their learning. We understand that family events and opportunities to travel sometimes arise. Please be aware that under Ministry of Education guidelines, holidays taken during term time are recorded as unjustified absences.

Our term 1 data for attendance was 81% (of our tamariki attending 90% of the time), In term 2 this was 71% - a 10% difference. So far this term we are sitting at 66%. Our goal for this year is 74% (of our tamariki attending 90% of the time) and the government's target is 80% for 2026.
