Rising 6th Graders and Band
Join the Northern Middle School Band
Information and Rental Meeting
Tuesday, April 28th, 6:30pm
What can I play? Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, or Trombone
** Students interested in saxophone should begin on the clarinet unless you have one or are able to provide one for your child to use.**
We audition for instruments such as percussion, French horn, tuba, or baritone a few months into the school year.
How do I sign up? Make sure you choose “band” when you register for classes. If you have already signed up we can change it to Band.
How do I get an instrument? You can either:
Rent: go to musicarts.com/rentals to rent an instrument (more about this on the back)
Use your own instrument
Borrow: let Mrs. Nance know and you can borrow an instrument from school
you can buy your own instrument, but we do not recommend buying instruments yet Why do band??
Instant group of friends
Learn a new instrument/skill
We go on an awesome field trip like Carowinds
Other opportunities like performances, jazz band, pep band, and other field trips
It is hard work, but it is a lot of fun and very rewarding!
Students who learn a musical instrument: It literally makes you smarter (really)
Questions? Email Mrs. Nance: nances@person.k12.nc.us
It’s worth it! Hope to see you next school year
Information about Renting an instrument from Music & Arts You pay a monthly fee ($32 per month) to rent an instrument for as long as you want to.
Pros:
The program is “rent to own,” meaning that the money you pay each month builds up towards eventually paying off and owning the instrument as your own.
If you want to switch instruments, the money you’ve paid so far transfers to your new instrument rental (besides percussion. For some reason money already paid doesn’t transfer to a percussion rental).
LDW insurance option. A few extra dollars per month ($10 per month) that covers any and all accidents, repairs, or necessary maintenance. This is highly recommended! (this is middle school we’re talking about J)
We have an Educational Representative visit us from the company every week to check in, pickup or drop off instruments, and potentially do easy repairs on site. It’s always the same guy so Mrs. Nance has consistent communication with him.
Cons:
There aren’t too many other companies like this, so unfortunately if you want to rent but want to check out other options, this is all that you’ve got so you’re sort of stuck to their prices and options. All that being said, even though this is a national company, they do a good job of still making a big corporation have a small-town and personable feel.
How do I rent an instrument from Music & Arts?
Log onto the website: musicarts.com/rentals
Click “Rental tab,” then click Lets Go
then type state and then “Northern” to select “Northern Middle School,”
then click “6th grade.”
For When will they need this instrument? Click “Reserve for Later” then select “Fall” Select Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, or Trombone.
Select your rental plan and option for LDW insurance (recommended!)
Choose your school supplies and method book (Get these! I pre-selected the ones that you would need for each instrument, unless you already have music stand at home, then you can deselect that option)
Add to cart and Checkout!! You’ll have a create a new account (write down your password!). For Shipping select “Pickup at School” so it’ll ship right to me and I’ll hand them out once school starts. **Let Mrs. Nance know once you rent an instrument so he can keep it for her records for the fall!

Dismissal: Students are released at 3:00pm. Due to dismissal procedures, we ask that students do not check out after 2:40pm without prior approval from an administrator.

Attendance Matters
Attendance “Myth Busters”
Myth: A day or two doesn’t matter
Fact: Just 2 days a month = a whole school year lost by high school
Myth: Elementary absences don’t impact later success
Fact: Early attendance sets the tone for graduation
Attendance when Sick:
As for attendance during sickness, please remember that students must be fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication prior to returning to school. Also, for students who have had upset stomachs, they must be 24 hours symptom free before returning to school. While we stress the importance of attendance, healthy students is a top priority. Please do your part in keeping others healthy. If your child misses school due to sickness, please send a note to your chlid's teacher to have the absence excused.
Car Line Safety
We are excited to have new cones this year. The picture above shows our morning car line and afternoon car line (post fastpass). Please follow the traffic pattern established by the cones to ensure student safety. A cone means- do not drive in this area.
Car Line Reminders and Information
Car riders will dismiss at 3pm daily. For the safety of our staff and students, please follow the directions of any staff members helping with car line.
Important Reminders:
-Please remain in your vehicles (with the exception of students who need mobility assistance).
-Please follow the directions of staff members. To keep traffic out of Chub Lake Rd, they will be directing you to move up to specific cones before allowing your child to get in.
-Staff will open the car door for students to enter the vehicle, but they will not be responsible for buckling the student in.
We ask for your patience as the beginning of school year car line runs a little slowly at first. It will move faster once everyone is more familiar with the processes.
