➗📏📐Staff Spotlight ~ Mrs. Valarie Halverson ➕🍎

  1. What is your position and how long have you been with Custer School District? 7 & 8 Math Teacher. 15 years.
  2. Why did you choose to work for CSD? The initial reason is that I got married and this is where my husband lived. I have grown to love our school district and the opportunities that it offers for our students.
  3. What piece of advice would share with students that you did not learn in school? Always keep learning and embrace failures and mistakes because we learn more from them.
  4. What’s a fun fact about you? I enjoy hiking and camping. My kids and I complete the Custer State Park trail challenge every summer. We go tent camping in the Big Horns a couple of times each summer. I spend a lot of time going to watch my kids participate in activities (soccer, wrestling, cross country, basketball, track, and baseball). I have coached soccer for the YMCA for six or seven years.

Thank you, Mrs. Halverson, for your 18 years of dedicated service to the students & staff of Custer! Also, thank you for being willing to sharing photos of you when you were a student! You were a busy student back at Newell High School!

📏Employee Spotlight ~ Mrs. Sandy Crown ~ 19 Years of Service 🏫

👩🏻‍🏫Tell us a little about yourself: I grew up in Armour, SD, and went on to Dakota State University. After graduating, I taught at Marty Indian School, Wall, and New Underwood before moving to Custer Schools. I teach 1st grade at Hermosa School; this year makes teaching in Custer School District for 19 years.

🏫What is one of your favorite memories while teaching at Hermosa?

My favorite memory is the year I received the CSD Little School House Award for that year the first graders collected school supplies to send over to Afghanistan. This was when my son was deployed there and he was able to hand out the supplies to the children over there.

📚What changes have taken place over your tenure with CSD?

The growing size of Hermosa and the brand new school are the changes I have been part of.

🍎What’s a fun fact about you? I love to take new classes that will help the students in the classroom and love to trying new ideas that will help them grow.

🎇What advice would you give to a new educator? Build relationships first, stay flexible, never stop learning, and celebrate your small wins.

🍎Do you have a favorite quote? I have 2 favorite quotes: “Every day may not be good, but there’s something good in every day.” ~ Alice Morse Earle. I also love this quote, “ The struggle you have today is developing the strength you need for tomorrow." ~ Robert Tew

A HUGE "Thank You" Sandy, for your 19 years of dedicated service, for all you do and have done for students and staff of Hermosa School! You are appreciated! And, thanks for sharing your precious school photo of when you were a 1st Grader! 💟

2025-26 School Meal Prices

The School Board recently voted not to increase school meal prices. They will remain the same as last year. Board Vice President Hartshorn wanted to remind the community that any individual or business can donate to the Beef-to-Schools Program even if they do not have a ranch - their donation can offset processing costs. Fun fact: Custer School District was the first school in South Dakota to serve donated bison for school lunch!
