The Essential
September 2024
Welcome to the 2024-2025 School Year DDSD!
Welcome Back! The Equity Department looks forward to supporting this year in equity work around the district.
The Essential is the equity department’s newsletter in which we will update you with news, events, and other resources that will aid you in the equity work that you are doing both personally and in your professional role. In this newsletter, we will also celebrate and uplift traditionally marginalized groups that are represented throughout our community.
As a district, we have committed to equity learning. Last year, we got a lot of wonderful feedback around needs for professional development, and we've worked hard with admin, equity chairs, and restorative practice champions on this. This year our PD topics are:
- Relationship Centered Learning & Equity
- Explicit & Implicit Bias,
- Special Education, Universal Design for Learning, and Disability Justice
- Intersectionality
- Deep Dives (a deeper look into some of the topics we covered last year)
We are looking forward to continuing to grow in equity this year!

Staff Affinity Groups Highlights
Did you know that our district has two staff affinity groups? See below to learn about them!
The Staff of Color Group was established in 2019 by a group of BIPOC teachers. This group meetings monthly and alternates months between a social focus and an action focus. If you are interested in learning more about this affinity group, please reach out to Sabrina Sommer (sabrina_sommer@ddsd40.org) or Andreina Velasco (andreina_velasco@ddsd40.org).
The LGBTQ+ Affinity group was created last year out of a need of more Queer visibility around the district. This group meets based off of member availability. If you're interested in learning more about/joining this group, please email Gabie Mbenza-Ngoma (gabie_mbenza-ngoma@ddsd40.org)
Cultural and Identity Celebrations
Every month, we will highlight the cultural and identity based celebrations that are celebrated nationally within each month. However, it is important to state that people who hold the identities that we are celebrating should not only be celebrated one month out of the year. We choose to celebrate the diversity of often marginalized groups because their histories and stories historically have been left out. There are many people who hold these identities within our community, students and staff, who deserve to see themselves in the work we do. We move forward with these celebrations encouraging a continuing visibility, representation, and celebration of the groups we highlight.

A SUMMER OF BUILDING PATHWAYS
The GYO program was in full swing this summer, building pathways for our brilliant David Douglas students to become our future educators! In partnership with Multnomah Educators Rising, the GYO program hired an unprecedented 18 interns to work in our district elementary, middle, and high school summer programs. The GYO Summer Internship aims to SUPPORT and INSPIRE David Douglas high school graduates and rising seniors to join the educator workforce through a combination of coursework, on the job experience, mentorship and community support.
All GYO Summer Interns were David Douglas students who identified as BIPOC; the majority of them were also multilingual. Each intern worked alongside a cooperating teacher, who guided them to provide academic support and lead enrichment activities for summer school students. Interns appreciated the mentorship they received from experienced educators and were able to add their cooperating teachers as references to their resumes. In exciting news, 4 summer interns have accepted full-time positions as instructional assistants in David Douglas schools and are starting their associates program at PCC, with the long-term goal of transferring to teacher preparation programs. Meet our amazing 2024 GYO Summer Interns here.
If you are or you know a David Douglas student, family, or community member who is interested in pursuing a career in education, please contact Andreina Velasco (andreina_velasco@ddsd40.org), Grow Your Own Pathway Navigator.
Essential Spotlight!
Open Houses/ Back to School Nights
What a wonderful start to the year it has been. We have had the opportunity of being at every open house that has happened this year so far. Thank you all for the dedication and excitement that you have brought to the beginning of the year.
At open houses, our team has been tabling for both Grow Your Own and the Equity Department. The Equity Specialists have been asking families and students to indicate what values they hope that their schools will have. Each person was given three stickers and they had a choice of the following values: Friendliness, Joy, Safety, Academic Challenge, Creativity, Resourceful, Relationship Building, Supportive Community, and Clear Communication. Moving forward, this data can be used by equity teams to see what students and families value about school and what action steps they can take to ensure these values are being upheld.
