Hello NMS Families,

It's hard to believe that we are already coming to the end of October! The fall is flying by, and there is so much happening at NMS!

Our cross country and field hockey teams are wrapping up strong seasons, and we are so proud of the hard work, dedication, and sportsmanship our student-athletes have demonstrated. Our after-school clubs are also in full gear, with students enjoying opportunities to explore their interests, try new things, and connect with friends.

We are also excited to kick off our NMS Digital Discount Card Fundraiser! This is a great opportunity to save money while supporting our students. All proceeds go directly into grade-level activity funds to help offset the costs of field trips and other special events. For just $25 (plus a small processing fee), families can purchase a digital discount card that provides a full year of savings at local businesses and thousands of locations nationwide. We hope you'll consider purchasing a card and sharing the opportunity with family and friends. Every sale helps!

Next week, we are looking forward to celebrating NMS Spirit Week! We have a fun week planned and hope to see lots of Patriot Pride throughout the building. Be sure to check out all the details below. Please note that students should not wear Halloween costumes to school next Friday.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support of NMS. We have had a wonderful start to the school year, and we look forward to all that November will bring!

Kind regards,

Lauren & Evan

Diary of a Wimpy Kid Livestream

On Friday, the students in Ms. Estes's class were able to listen to Diary of a Wimpy Kid author Jeff Kinney on a livestream along with 2,000 other students throughout the country. He started out by engaging the students in guessing the names of three characters as he sketched them. He warned that he would try to trick them, but Ms. Estes's class scored a 3 out of 3! Next came a trivia challenge on his books, and again, Ms. Estes's class scored a 3 out of 3! He then read 10 pages from his new book, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Fight or Flight, and finished by answering audience questions, where the students learned about his writing process. It was an enjoyable time for everyone!

Can a Fancy Cup Keep Iced Coffee Colder Longer?

Our 6th graders have been investigating an interesting question: Why do the makers of a “fancy cup” sold at Starbucks claim their cup will keep iced coffee colder longer?

Students have been exploring what keeps things hot or cold for the longest time and, more importantly, why! Through investigations and classroom discussions, students have been learning how materials and the transfer of thermal energy affect temperature.

Students are also learning to think about the cup as a system! The system includes all the different parts of the cup, along with the water and air inside. All of these parts interact and work together. Some cups have structural features, such as insulating layers or lids, that help maintain the temperature of the substance inside.

Students are investigating how thermal energy can enter the cup system, how energy transfers out of the system, and how gases may escape. These features can help explain why some cups keep drinks cold longer than others.

Who knew a cup of iced coffee could lead to so much science? Our 6th graders are using their scientific thinking to explain the science behind an everyday product!

Recycled Instruments in Music

In 6th-grade music, our unit "What is Music?" focuses on expanding students' understanding of sound by exploring non-traditional instruments. Students watched the story of the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura and explored how repurposed landfill materials can be turned into fully functioning orchestral instruments. Pictured here, students have completely taken the reins on planning their instrument, choosing which recycled materials they will use, and began building a (hopefully!) fully functioning instrument!

Donate your plastic bags!

♻️ Help NMS Take on the Trex Challenge! ♻️

We’re collecting plastic film and bags to donate as part of the Trex Recycling Challenge, and we’d love your help! Save your used grocery bags and other plastic wraps/film and send them our way. Donation bins are available right here at NMS. It’s an easy way to keep plastic out of the trash while helping our school reach our recycling goal.
