Weekly Focus
Student Focus
Virtue of the Month: Compassion
hul'qumi'num word of the week: 'imushtul It means: to walk together
Behaviour focus: Being respectful in the washrooms
Open Parachute Parent Resource of the Week
Open Parachute is a district mental wellness program being used in many classrooms. A wonderful addition to the program is that it has a parent portal that you can access anytime if you are struggling at home with specific issues. It gives families an opportunity to open up the conversation about mental health, at home, so that students know it is a safe place to share how they are feeling, provide them with useful tools, and provide an opportunity to connect with you.
I will be including a weekly link for families to take a look at, but please know that you can access any of the modules that you want. The topics I send will either align with our virtue, behaviour of the month, or issues that are coming up at school.
Tiger Pride & Gold Thumb Awards
Congratulations to this week's winners!
Returning next week!
Things You Need to Know
Halloween Costume Reminders 👹👻🎃
It is an exciting week coming up with Halloween finishing us off on Friday! We will be have a Halloween parade at 9:00 a.m. as well as a inflatable costume dance-off!! A reminder for school-appropriate costumes so that you can check them at home:
- NO pretend weapons of any kind can come to school. Please review ministerial order in next section regarding this.
- Masks can be worn for the parade but must be removed during the remainder of the school day
- Please avoid excessive gore as we still have young students who can be scared by this
- Please ensure costumes are comfortable for full day wear. Also dress for the weather
- Please avoid bringing candy to school on that day and over the next few weeks. We need our brains ready for learning!
Looking forward to a fun day!!
BC’s new Firearm Violence Prevention Act (FVPA)
British Columbia’s Firearm Violence Prevention Act (FVPA) came into effect on October 1, 2026, establishing a province-wide ban on firearms, low-velocity firearms (such as BB, pellet, gel, airsoft and paintball guns), and all imitation firearms across all K-12 school properties.
The FVPA strengthens existing laws and school and district policies banning firearms and imitation firearms on school property by providing police with additional tools to address and enforce firearm-related public safety risks.
Our Student Code of Conduct bans all weapons from school property. The FVPA further bans all imitation firearms as well.
The goal of the FVPA is to support greater public safety by keeping firearms and objects that look like firearms out of schools. This includes all imitation firearms, including anything that is part of a costume, for a school theatre or video production, a starter gun for track and field, or part of a uniform (i.e. Cadets). There are narrow instances where an exemption may be granted by school authorities for an imitation firearm to be allowed on school property.
Anyone that possesses a firearm, low-velocity firearm, or imitation firearm on school property without a valid exemption may have these items confiscated, forfeited, and disposed of by law enforcement, and if convicted of an offence, could also face fines and serious penalties under the FVPA.
Remembrance Day Preparation - Honouring Those Who've Served
As we prepare for our Remembrance Day ceremony, we would like to honour the family members and loved ones of our school community who have served our country.
If you have a photo of someone special you would like to recognize, please email it to tammi.burke@sd68.bc.ca. Please include the name of the person in the photo and their relationship to the student(s) at our school.
Thank you for helping us make this a meaningful opportunity for our school community to remember and reflect.
Pitch Black Productions presents...
DARK WHISPERS
We’re one week away from DARK WHISPERS, a creepy recreation of radio programs that were broadcast over the airwaves in the 1940s, the perfect way to kick off the Hallowe’en season!
Our evening show will take place on the LIS stage on Thursday, October 29th at 6:00 pm. The doors will open 20 minutes before the show. Thank you to all those who ordered tickets. Tickets will be sent home with students on Tuesday, October 27th. Please make sure that you bring your tickets with you to the show on October 29th to gain entry to the gym. Donations will be accepted at the door to help fund this year’s upcoming drama productions.
If you haven’t ordered tickets yet, there are some left. Ticket order forms can be downloaded and printed below or you can find it on Mr. Michalopoulos’ drama website at https://pitchblackdrama.weebly.com/ (If you cannot print out the order form, please send your child to see Mr. M to pick up a paper copy.)
Some important notes to consider while filling out the form...
1) Tickets are FREE and must be pre-ordered. You cannot get tickets at the performance. Please only order the number of tickets needed. Donations will be accepted at the door to help cover costs of future drama productions this year.
2) Some of the sound effects and storylines can be intense and scary. We are asking NOT to bring sensitive students or young children (under Grade 4) to the performance.
3) All students must be accompanied by an adult at all times and cannot attend the show by themselves.
4) Your ticket order form must be handed in to your child’s teacher BY TUESDAY, OCTOBER 27th.
We hope to see you at...

Munchalunch Information!
Hello LIS Families,
Welcome to our Hot Lunch and Goodies program for Ladysmith Intermediate School for the 2026/2027 school year. The Fall 2026 session on Munchalunch is now 'live' for ordering the following:
· Hot Lunches (Panago Pizza, Subway sandwiches, Ironworks Crêpes)
· Popcorn
· Booster Juice
Hot Lunches:
Our hot lunches are every Monday (exception: lunches are on the Tuesday when there is no school on the Monday). We have Gluten Free, Dairy Free, and Gluten/Dairy Free options. Feel free to plan ahead and order all of your lunches at one time. Please ensure you have ordered and paid for all meals by 10:00 pm on the Thursday prior to the scheduled hot lunch day. You will get a confirmation email for the order. You will also receive an email the day before your paid hot lunch as a reminder not to pack a lunch for your child. Yay!
*Please note our Subway Subs are pre-loaded with light mayo and lettuce, tomato, and cucumber. We do not allow for customization. If your child does not like mayo or veggies, you can order a plain meat and cheese sub as an alternative.
Popcorn Days:
Popcorn will be served on the 1st Wednesday of every month. $2 for a large bag of popcorn. Pre-order on Munchalunch. No cash sales. Order cut off is 10:00 pm the Monday night before popcorn day.
Booster Juice:
Booster Juice will be served on the last Wednesday of every month (except October, which will be a week earlier). $5.25 for a smoothie. There are 3 choices: Strawberry Sunshine, Mango Hurricane, and Pirate's Nectar. All are gluten free and all can be made dairy free. Order cut off is 10:00 pm the Wednesday before the Booster Juice day (7 days).
Pay-It-Forward:
There is a Pay-It Forward feature for every hot lunch, popcorn, and Booster Juice day in which you can purchase a meal or a treat for a student in need. These lunches and treats are handed out in a discreet manner. Thank you so much to last year's donors for purchasing lunches for our students. It is always appreciated.
Absences:
Should your child miss their scheduled hot lunch, popcorn, or Booster Juice due to being absent from school, please contact the office by 11:00 am to arrange for your child's lunch to be left at the office for pick up. You can also instruct that it be donated to another student as a Pay-It-Forward. If we do not hear from you we assume the child is at school and the lunch will still be delivered to your child's classroom (coordinators do not cross-reference the list of absent students with the list of orders placed).
Volunteers:
Volunteers are welcome! LIS has a small kitchen so we only have room for one adult working alongside the coordinator Devon Warren for lunches (we also use 4 student helpers). We need 3 adult helpers on Booster Juice days. Time commitment is 11:15/11:30 am to 12:30ish pm.
This is a great way to make your child's day at school! There are a number of ways to inquire about volunteering: Email the PAC, reach out on our PAC Facebook page (Ladysmith Intermediate School PAC), or contact Devon directly if you know her. A valid criminal record check with SD68 must be in place and an annual volunteer sheet must be completed (they are easy to do!)
Credits from Last Year:
If you had a student at LIS last year and had a credit due to some of the cancelled lunches, your credit will be applied in the coming weeks.
January-June 2027 Menu
The Spring 2027 menu will not be available until sometime over the Winter Break. Having two distinct ordering sessions allows us to tweak any issues that arise with our vendors and menu items. Keep monitoring our Facebook page for up-to-date info.
