FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
Good morning, McKinley!
I HAVE A BIG ASK OF YOU!
Please tell everyone you know that McKinley is at risk of losing almost $300,000 in funding for next school year. This funding pays for so many of the people, programs, and resources that make our school amazing.
We need 28 more students to qualify for Free and Reduced-Price Meals in order to maintain our Title I funding for 2026–27.
This is the LAST WEEK to submit an application!
Please fill out the form—even if you don't think you will qualify—and encourage every McKinley family you know to do the same. Every qualifying application gets us closer to keeping these important resources at our school.
Nearly $300,000 in Title I funding helps pay for:
Full-time Instructional Coach
Full-time School-Based Mental Health Counselor/Social Worker
Instructional Assistant for lower-grade intervention
STEM Teacher
TK–2 Music
Math professional development
PBL unit planning days
Teacher data meetings
Reading assessment substitute coverage
Refurbished classroom libraries
STEM Fair supplies
Garden materials
Family Summer Reading Program
Evening ELAC meetings
Spanish-language books for our Parent Book Club
Parent engagement materials
We only need 28 more students to qualify. Please help us spread the word and get those applications submitted this week. Every application matters!
In partnership,
Principal DW

College Wednesdays - 9/30
Every Wednesday is College Wednesday at McKinley! Students and staff are encouraged to wear a college or university shirt, sweatshirt, or other gear.
Why do we do it? College Wednesdays are one small way we help our students begin to imagine the many possibilities for their futures. Seeing the names of different colleges each week sparks conversations about where people go to college, what they can study, and the many paths available after high school. It’s never too early for our Lions to dream big!
ELAC Meeting - 10/1
If your child is learning English as a second language, please join us for our first evening ELAC (English Learner Advisory Committee) meeting! You can participate in person in the auditorium or on Zoom.
We’ll provide dinner and childcare, including activities for the kids, so you can participate fully and enjoy a night with no cooking!
ELAC is an incredibly important parent group at McKinley. ELAC families help us understand the experiences and needs of our English Learners and advise the school on programs and services that support their success. The committee also provides input into our School Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA), helping ensure that the needs of English Learners are reflected in our school goals, strategies, and use of resources.
Your experience, ideas, and voice matter. We hope you’ll join us!

Free and Reduced Meal Application - All Families Should Complete!
Although breakfast and lunch will continue to be free for all students this year, we ask that every McKinley family complete the Meal Application. The information collected determines whether our school qualifies for critical federal funding through Title I.
Thanks to the incredible efforts of our families last year, McKinley qualified as a schoolwide Title I school and received approximately $287,000 in additional funding! These funds help pay for our full-time counselor, STEM teacher, K–2 Reading Instructional Assistant, and many other essential programs and services for our students.
Completing the application may also help your family qualify for additional services, reduced fees, or scholarships. Please complete it through your ePacket or click the link below—even if you believe your family may not qualify.
Applications must be submitted before the morning of October 2, 2026. If you need assistance, please contact our Community Liaison, Andrea Padilla, at andreapadilla@smmusd.org. Every application makes a difference—please help us protect this vital funding for McKinley!
