Welcome to Katherine Johnson MS
2026-2027
Principal's Message
Welcome to the 2026-2027 School Year!
Dear Katherine Johnson Middle School Families,
Welcome to the 2026–2027 school year! It is my honor to welcome both our returning families and those joining our school community for the first time.
At Katherine Johnson Middle School, we are committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment where every student is challenged to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Our dedicated staff works each day to inspire curiosity, build meaningful relationships, and help students develop the confidence and skills they need to succeed both inside and outside the classroom.
Middle school is an exciting time of growth and discovery. We believe every student has unique strengths and limitless potential, and we are committed to providing opportunities that encourage critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and perseverance. Together, we will foster a culture of respect, responsibility, and kindness while maintaining high expectations for learning and personal growth.
Strong partnerships between school and home are essential to student success. We encourage families to stay connected by regularly visiting our website, reading school communications, attending events, and reaching out to our staff whenever questions or concerns arise. Working together, we can ensure every student has the support they need to thrive.
Important information from the district recently made into school board policy:
1. Cell phones MUST be off and away from 8AM-2:45PM (1:22PM on Thursdays). This includes passing periods and lunches.
2. Students may NOT ride an e-bike (except pedal assist) or e-scooter to or on campus
Please see below for further details.
Whether you're stepping onto our campus for the first time or returning for another year, we are excited to welcome you to the Katherine Johnson family. I look forward to seeing all that our students will accomplish this year and to celebrating their successes along the way.
Thank you for your continued support of Katherine Johnson Middle School. Together, let's make the 2026–2027 school year one filled with learning, growth, and unforgettable experiences.
Go Astros!
Sincerely,
Damon Smith

Get a head start on the 2026-27 school year
While there's still time to enjoy the break, the first day of school on Thursday, Aug. 13 will be here before we know it. One of the best ways to get a head start on the new school year is to complete your Annual Student Information Update through Parent Portal as soon as possible.
Completing this process now helps our schools prepare for the first day of school and ensures we have the most up-to-date information for your student.
To complete the Annual Student Information Update, log into Parent Portal using your PIN and password. Once logged in, click the "Information Update" link in the upper-right corner of the screen and complete each section of the questionnaire.
During the update process, you will:
Update emergency contact information so your school can reach you quickly if needed.
Complete the School Funding Form, which helps our schools receive funding for programs and services that support student success.
Review and acknowledge the 2026-27 Family Handbook, which includes important district resources and information about your rights and responsibilities.
Thank you for taking a few minutes to complete this important process. We look forward to welcoming your family back for another great school year on Aug. 13!

District-Wide Mobile Device Policy
Phones Away. Minds Engaged.
Beginning in the 2026-27 school year, students at elementary, K-8 and middle schools will keep personal mobile devices stored away throughout the school day, including during lunch and passing periods.
The change is designed to support student learning by reducing distractions, increasing engagement and encouraging more face-to-face interactions among students. Research and community feedback show that limiting access to phones and other personal devices during the school day can help students stay focused, participate more fully in school activities and strengthen connections with their peers.
Students may still bring phones and other personal mobile devices to school. However, devices must remain stored and inaccessible during the school day in accordance with school procedures. At Katherine Johnson Middle School, students will have cell phone violations tracked in a spreadsheet. After 5 violations, a student's homeroom teacher will make contact with home to discuss a plan for storing the phone on campus or leaving it at home. Phones may be taken during the school day if seen in class, during passing periods, or at lunch. Phones will be stored in a locked cabinet with only staff access if taken. Repeated violations may lead to progressive discipline including detentions, social probation, community service, and after school detentions.
Families can continue to contact students through the school office when needed, and students will have access to office support if they need to reach a parent or guardian. School emergency communication procedures will remain unchanged.
Thank you for your partnership as we work together to create a focused, supportive learning environment for all students. For additional information about the district's mobile device expectations, please visit www.sanjuan.edu/mobilepolicy.
District E-Bike Policy
Important e-bike reminder for families
As we prepare for the 2026-27 school year, we'd like to remind families about updated district e-transportation guidelines designed to support student and staff safety.
Beginning this school year, only Class 1 e-bikes are permitted at elementary, K-8 and middle school campuses.
Please also remember:
Helmets are required for all riders.
E-motos are not allowed on any San Juan Unified campus.
Students should follow all traffic laws and ride safely when traveling to and from school.
We encourage families to review these expectations with their students before the start of the school year to help ensure a safe and successful year for everyone.
For more information about e-bike classifications, safety requirements and district guidelines, visit sanjuan.edu/etransportation.
