Walled Lake Marching Band claims 2nd-straight state title 🏆🏆
(Photos: MCBA)
The Walled Lake Competitive Marching Band shined on Saturday at Ford Field claiming its second-straight MCBA Flight 1 State Championship with an incredible performance of its program, Charmed.
The combined marching band from Walled Lake Central and Walled Lake Western tallied an overall score of 92.20o, edging Rockford by nearly a half point. The band also took home four of five caption awards in Music, General Effect, Visual and Auxiliary. It’s also the first time the district has won back-to-back state championships since Walled Lake Central won in 2010 and 2011.
“I am incredibly proud of our team,” said co-director Grant Prater. “The Walled Lake Marching Band is truly comprised of the most dedicated, focused and hard-working individuals. While I was thrilled to see that their dedication, artistry and commitment to getting better was reflected in the judges scores and caption awards, I just love that I get to work with these students and see their personal growth every day.”
"I am so proud of not only the students earning their second straight state championship, but the hard work, discipline and dedication it takes to perform at the level that they do,” added co-director Michael Wolf. “Moreover, I am proud of how the students have approached every rehearsal and competition with a Walled Lake v. Walled Lake attitude, meaning we strive to be better every day than we were the day before. It is an honor to work with these students, families and community.”
The Walled Lake Competitive Marching Band will now prepare to head to Indianapolis on November 14 to compete at Bands of America’s 2025 Grand National Championships. Their prelim performance of Charmed will be on that Friday, 1:15 p.m., at Lucas Oil Stadium. The semifinals and finals then take place on Saturday beginning at 7 a.m.
Marching Knights will perform in Rome’s 2027 New Year’s Day Parade 🥁
Dignitaries from Italy took the stage at Walled Lake Northern on Monday to officially invite the Marching Knights to Rome as a featured performer in their 2027 New Year’s Day Parade.
"We are absolutely thrilled and deeply honored to receive this invitation,” said Walled Lake Northern Band Director Mary Hulliberger. “To be selected for the Rome New Year’s Day Parade is a testament to the dedication, talent and spirit of our students.”
"What an opportunity of a lifetime to represent not only Walled Lake Northern but the district as a whole in one of the oldest cities of the world," said junior Drum Major Luke Henry. "The opportunity play music and connect with the culture in Italy will be unlike anything I have ever been apart of. It is an honor and privilege."
"Representing our school and our country on the world stage is the kind of opportunity you dream about,” said Kyle Hulliberger, who is a junior and tuba section leader. “I can’t wait to march through Rome with my band family.”
The Knights’ will spend a week in Rome, where they will also have the opportunity to perform in the town of Frascati, tour historic sites and immerse themselves in Italian culture. Some of the places they will visit include the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, Vatican City, Pompeii and the Catacombs.
Assemble the Minions! 💛
Walnut Creek Middle School assembled the Minions the day before Halloween in an attempt to set a new Guinness World Record.
Principal Gru, or as you may know him as Seth Taboh, rallied students and staff to join in on the fun. The Hawks’ PTSA even provided 200 costume for students who didn’t have them and wanted to participate.
Walnut Creek unofficially shattered the previous world record of 419 by assembling 580 Minions in the gym. Mr. Taboh has since submitted the Hawks’ record to Guinness to make it an official world record.
