PTO Newsletter February #1
Dear Murray Families and Caregivers,
As PTO Co-President, I am writing to you as both a school leader and a fellow member of this community who cares deeply about our children and about each of you.
The past several weeks have been incredibly difficult for our city. ICE activity in our neighborhoods has created fear and uncertainty for many families, and financial hardships caused by missed work and the need to shelter in place have added even more stress. We see the weight this carries, and we want you to know that you are not alone.
Stress and trauma can affect mental health in many ways. It may show up as anxiety, irritability, difficulty sleeping, trouble concentrating, withdrawal, or sudden emotional reactions. Some children may act out; others may become very quiet. Adults may feel overwhelmed, exhausted, or constantly worried. These responses are normal and expected during prolonged uncertainty. There is nothing “wrong” with your child — or with you — for feeling this way.
At Murray, students’ emotional well-being is just as important as their academic success. If you notice changes in your child or your family that concern you, please reach out to the school. Staff are committed to responding with compassion and confidentiality.
This newsletter also includes additional mental health resources for families, both within the school and in the broader community. We encourage you to explore and use them as needed. Seeking support is a sign of strength.
Most importantly, every child at Murray belongs here. Every family belongs here. We remain committed to supporting our community with care, respect, and compassion during this challenging time.
With care and solidarity,
Lynnae Erwin, President
Mandi Rupp, President
Nia Anderson, Treasurer
Kerrin Flanagan, Secretary

PTO Celebrates Murray Staff with a Special Lunch & Sweet Surprises
Last Friday, the PTO had the pleasure of celebrating the incredible Murray Middle School staff with a catered lunch from Tacosito! It was a small way to say a very big thank you to the staff who work tirelessly every day to teach, guide, and care for our children.
Earlier in the week staff were also surprised with individualized goodie bags. A heartfelt thank you to all who donated items or money and helped make those surprise deliveries possible. There were lots of appreciative texts and comments from staff who were thrilled with the extra bit of happiness and appreciation during one of the hardest months in a typical school year - this year being no exception!
At Murray, our staff go above and beyond every single day to support students academically, socially, and emotionally. We are so grateful for the opportunity to celebrate them and for the families who partner with the PTO to make moments like these happen.
Thank you for helping us show our staff just how much they are appreciated!
The Murray Market
The Murray Market Has Been Open Almost One Month!
It’s hard to believe that The Murray Market has been open for nearly a month — and what a busy month it has been!
In just a few short weeks, Murray families have utilized the Market for essential groceries, household goods, toiletries, and clothing. We’ve been working hard to keep shelves stocked with commonly requested items — and even adding a few fun extras to bring a little joy to families and students, like Takis, cookies, and candy. Sometimes those small treats make a big difference.
The Murray Market is stocked entirely through the generosity of our community. Every single item on the shelves has been donated by someone who cares about supporting Murray families.
As demand continues to grow, we need your help to keep the donations coming in. Please consider:
- Purchasing items from our Amazon Wishlist
- Donating through the GiveMN Murray PTO fundraiser
- Sharing these links with friends, family, neighbors, and local businesses who may want to support
Your generosity keeps our shelves full and ensures Murray students and families have access to what they need — with dignity and care.
Thank you for being part of this incredible community.
Murray Specific Rent Assistance
**Murray Community Rent Fund**
Many immigrant families have missed work and income as a result of the recent events in the Twin Cities. In addition to feeling unsafe and unwelcome, many are now facing difficulties paying their rent. Funds raised through this effort will be used to provide direct rent assistance to Murray Middle School families experiencing housing instability or financial hardship. Our goal is to get help to families quickly and respectfully, during a time when many are facing unexpected challenges.
All funds raised will be passed directly to families for rent support or other immediate needs.
This is a short-term, community-led mutual aid effort rooted in care, trust, and solidarity. We are grateful for any support you’re able to offer and for helping us show up for our neighbors.
This was organized by a group of involved parents and Murray Middle School staff, organizing outside of the school day and independent of the district, who want to support families in our school community who have been affected by recent events in the Twin Cities.
As of February 3, we have helped 13 families with rent. We know these needs are not stopping yet and we are committed to continuing to support our families.
