KPF Newsletter 5/20/26
May 20, 2026
A Note from Dr. Busse
Hello Kenny Families!
If your calendar looks like a colorful mosaic and you feel like you are racing to the finish line but don’t have enough time to even catch your breath, you are not alone. Welcome to May—the ultimate sprint at the end of the school year marathon! Even this newsletter didn't make the calendar time frame, but field day was amazing! Huge thanks to all of the families that cheered on our kids, the parent volunteers and staff, and Mr. Miller's big lift for a wonderful event. While the end of the year is incredibly chaotic, it is also a beautiful celebration of everything our Kenny kids have accomplished.
Before we cross the finish line, there are still lessons being learned and ideas that we hope the Kenny kids carry forward. First is the concept of time and place, and to think before they speaking or repeating. Last week, we learned this the hard way, but in a very authentic way. We encourage students to take risks but know that with the risks will come mistakes. Mistakes create learning opportunities and the lesson comes in what we learn from the mis-steps. The second take away is a deep sense of belonging - Everyone is a Kenny Kid, you are always a Kenny Kid. We hope every student walks out of our doors knowing they were an essential part of our community and that their unique presence truly matters.
As we are wrapping up the end of the year, we are planning for next year! The supply list is out, we have started meeting with future Kenny Kids and be on the look out for dates and calendars! The Kenny Staff have been reflecting and processing on this year, with bug ideas for net year. Education is never done; we are constantly growing and looking to improve. We are looking forward to welcoming our new Kenny teammates:
Justin Jones: Special Education Resource Teacher
Meg Macdonald: 5th Grade Teacher
Jade Baker: 1st Grade Teacher
AND a brand new Autism Spectrum Self-Contained Classroom - with additional staff to come.
As we navigate these busy final weeks, we are leaning heavily on the Kenny Bees. The chaos of our schedule does not negate how we behave - to be responsible, respectful, safe, and to always do your best.
Thank you for your unwavering partnership, endless support, and coordination through the twists and turns of this year. Let's make these last few weeks safe, memorable, and filled with joy!
In Partnership and Community,
Dr. Jessica Busse
Principal, Kenny School

Kenny Carnival is May 28
Kenny Carnival is Coming!
Join us Thursday, May 28 from 5:00-7:00pm at the Kenny Playground for one of the most anticipated events of the school year!
This year’s carnival will feature:
🎯 Games & activity stations
🎈 New inflatables
🍭 Cotton candy
🌭 FREE food, snacks, and treats
🏆 Prizes and tons of fun
We’ll be serving FREE hot dog meals (classic hot dog, chips, water or juice box, and candy) while supplies last. Meals will be available until 6:30pm or until food runs out. No meal pre-order is needed this year.
Volunteers Needed
The Kenny Carnival only happens because of our amazing volunteers - and we need your help to make this event a success!
This year we’ve added even more games and activities, but they can only run if we have enough volunteers signed up ahead of time. The shifts are short and easy, and volunteering is a fun way to be part of the excitement.
Please consider signing up for a volunteer shift today!
Since Carnival takes place on our first day back after Memorial Day weekend, we especially need volunteers to sign up ahead of time so we can plan accordingly.
Thank you for helping make this such a special night for our Kenny community!
Kenny Garden Update
Calling all Kenny bees! STEAM Class Pollinator Plantings
Kenny Kids have been busy growing hundreds of pollinator plants from seed in STEAM Class, and on Tuesday Ms. Schweiss and Ms. Hardesty's classes helped plant them in the Kenny gardens! Students learned how to plant seedlings and how vegetable and fruit plants get pollinated. These plants should start blooming mid-summer and will still be "buzzing" when kids get back to school in the fall.
Next Garden Cleanup Day is Sunday, May 31
Big thanks to all the Kenny families and neighbors who helped with the first round of spring clean-up! Please join us for our next Spring Cleanup Day on Sunday, May 31 from 9:30am-Noon. Tools are provided if you don't have any, and no gardening experience is necessary (really!).
Volunteers Needed to Help Water This Summer
Our new veggie, flower, and berry plants on the east side of the school are thirsty and we need volunteers to help water throughout the summer!
Each grade level is assigned a day of the week to check on the garden and water. Weekends are open to any grade level. If it rains, you get a day off. Once we know who is interested in watering we'll send out a separate sign-up for specific date(s), and detailed instructions will be sent to all volunteers!
As a bonus you'll be able to harvest and take home any of the produce that’s ready! Thank you for helping us keep our new garden space beautiful and productive over the summer months!
Kenny Spring Concerts: June 3 & 5
The first week of June is going to feature a lot of performances highlighting what kids have been learning in music class this year through song.
Wednesday, June 3 at 9:45, grades 3 and 4 will be singing for their end-of-the-year concert
Friday, June 5, at 9:45, grades k,1, and 2 will be singing for their end-of-the-year concert
Each concert will be about 30-45 minutes long. Hope to see you there!
These events are free, but ticketed. Tickets can be claimed here:
Volunteers Needed for 5th Grade Promotion June 9th
5th grade promotion is Tuesday, June 9 at 2:30pm in the gym. We need volunteers to: buy refreshments (will be reimbursed by KPF); help set up; help serve refreshments; and help clean up. Traditionally 4th grade parents help volunteer at 5th grade promotion so 5th grade parents can just enjoy the day but we are open to anyone who would like to help out! Thank you!

2026-2027 School Supplies
Support Our Educators: Shoes for Sweden!
Minneapolis - Uppsala Educator Exchange Fundraiser
This year, we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Minneapolis - Uppsala Educator Exchange Program! This incredible, unparalleled professional development opportunity allows Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) educators to visit Sweden to engage with international colleagues, school leadership, and city officials to enhance classroom learning. This year we had 18 MPS educators participate from the following sites: Andersen Middle School, Anthony Middle School, Armatage Elementary, Pillsbury Elementary, Marcy Elementary, Kenny Elementary, Lake Harriet Lower & Upper Elementary, Hiawatha Elementary, Keewaydin Elementary, Hall STEM Academy, and the Davis Center.
Because our educators invest their own time and funds to cover airfare and lodging, we are launching a special fundraiser to help make this life-changing experience possible for more of our MPS staff next spring.
How you can help: It’s time for some spring cleaning! We are collecting gently used shoes to raise funds for the program. Every pair you donate helps reduce the costs of travel for an MPS educator.
Get Involved: Clean out your closets: Gather up your gently used shoes that are in good condition.
Donate: Kenny Lobby
Share: Spread the word to your friends, family, and neighbors!
All donated shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of micro-enterprise (small business) partners. Funds2Orgs works with micro-entrepreneurs in helping them create, maintain and grow small businesses in developing countries where economic opportunity and jobs are limited. Proceeds from the sales of the shoes collected in shoe drive fundraisers are used to feed, clothe, and house their families. One budding entrepreneur in Haiti even earned enough to send her son to law school.
