Alternative Recess Alternative Recess

Something new we are trying this year to support students is an alternative recess. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, we will have a table in the lunchroom for a maximum of 3 students from each classroom that were recommended by their teacher because the child does not engage in large motor activities, may be having difficulty engaging/playing with peers, may be feeling left out, complains of being lonely or are just having an emotionally hard week. Please note that students stay the same for the week (T and Th). New students may be added the following week. This is not a punishment and is not a demand. This is something that students always have a choice to say "no thank you" even though a teacher may recommend it. Some of the activities that students may choose during this time are coloring, drawing, art activities, puzzles, chess, card games, and jenga.

Recess Reset Recess Reset

We are fortunate to have Melanie Briggs as our lead lunch supervisor this year. She is a huge asset to our building and we are happy to welcome her back this year. In addition to Melanie, we also have Jenny Landines, Karla Ledlow, Karri White, Candace Kloss, Danielle Taormina, Pam Weberski, Haley Stroski, Debbie Cottone, and Tiffany DeSalvo as our weekly lunch supervisors. In order to support recess expectations and make sure that all students are safe on the playground, we have instituted a recess reset area for students to use as a calm down area when problems occur outside. This area is a place for students to “reset” either with the help of an adult or on their own, before heading back to play. This space is in no way a time out, but a designated place to manage emotions and reduce stress, while promoting emotional regulation and fostering self-awareness and mindfulness. By offering a safe and calming environment, it helps students develop healthy coping mechanisms and prevents emotional outbursts. In addition, all lunch staff have been trained in emotional regulation strategies to support our students at Bell Graham.
