Cameron Vergenes places 2nd at Math 24 Gifted Competition! Cameron Vergenes places 2nd at Math 24 Gifted Competition!

Congratulations to fourth grade student Cameron Vergenes on his outstanding performance at the Math 24 gifted competition at McGuffey High School. Excellent job, Cameron- way to represent our school district. We are all very proud of you!

Have you noticed...

While Coach Vigliotti and his wrestling team continue their march through the Wrestling Individuals with the hope of capturing more WPIAL glory on their way to another trip to Hershey for Individuals, Coach Zitner and her girls basketball team have quietly been taking care of business on their way to what we hope will be a WPIAL championship. The girls made it to the final four of Class 2A with their victory over Greensburg Central Catholic on Wednesday evening. This is a BHS first! Next up is #1 seed Shenango on Saturday, February 25th at 2:00 PM at Beaver Falls. Please note, the game is at Beaver Falls' middle school gymnasium, which is next to the high school. It is not at the high school.

We are proud of our boys basketball team!

Though our varsity boys basketball team was not victorious in their opening round WPIAL playoff game earlier this week, we are proud of their accomplishments and the continual growth they demonstrated as the season progressed. We look for big things from this fine group of student-athletes next season. Great job, guys!

5th grade Explorers Unit

As a part of the 5th grade Explorers Unit, students learned that in the 1400s, the Portuguese developed a new sea worthy ship called Caravel. After studying about how this ship came to be, students were given the task of following directions to create their own model Caravel. The pictures below showcase the students' work.

Concern/Communication Chain

This week in Ms. Bebo's classroom...

Ms. Bebo’s 8th grade science classes spent the last few days using the Hot Wheels Speedometry kits to calculate speed and to explore how forces like gravity and friction affect those speeds.

Did You Know...

Some may ask: "Why does a school board meet in executive session, and not in public for some issues?"

The simple answer is that some items involve confidential information, and not all of the information can be discussed in a public session. Some may think that business is conducted "in secret" or that a Board and/or Superintendent is trying to hide something, this is absolutely not true. Some items a Board and Superintendent deal with are very complex, and for a variety of reasons, discussions sometimes must be held "behind closed doors." Ultimately, all official Board action and voting must be done in public, and this is definitely the case at Burgettstown. Please read below for more information.

An agency may hold an executive session for one or more of the following reasons:

(1) To discuss any matter involving the employment, appointment, termination of employment, terms and conditions of employment, evaluation of performance, promotion or disciplining of any specific prospective public officer or employee or current public officer or employee employed or appointed by the agency, or former public officer or employee, provided, however, that the individual employees or appointees whose rights could be adversely affected may request, in writing, that the matter or matters be discussed at an open meeting. The agency's decision to discuss such matters in executive session shall not serve to adversely affect the due process rights granted by law, including those granted by Title 2 (relating to administrative law and procedure). The provisions of this paragraph shall not apply to any meeting involving the appointment or selection of any person to fill a vacancy in any elected office.

(2) To hold information, strategy and negotiation sessions related to the negotiation or arbitration of a collective bargaining agreement or, in the absence of a collective bargaining unit, related to labor relations and arbitration.

(3) To consider the purchase or lease of real property up to the time an option to purchase or lease the real property is obtained or up to the time an agreement to purchase or lease such property is obtained if the agreement is obtained directly without an option.

(4) To consult with its attorney or other professional advisor regarding information or strategy in connection with litigation or with issues on which identifiable complaints are expected to be filed.

(5) To review and discuss agency business which, if conducted in public, would violate a lawful privilege or lead to the disclosure of information or confidentiality protected by law, including matters related to the initiation and conduct of investigations of possible or certain violations of the law and quasi-judicial deliberations.

(6) For duly constituted committees of a board or council of trustees of a State-owned, State-aided or State-related college or university or community college or of the Board of Governors of the State System of Higher Education to discuss matters of academic admission or standings. [Does not pertain to school districts]

(7) To discuss, plan or review matters and records that are deemed necessary for emergency preparedness, protection of public safety and security of all property in a manner that if disclosed would be reasonably likely to jeopardize or threaten public safety or preparedness or public protection.

PEMA Launches Online Train Derailment Dashboard

Harrisburg, PA – In light of the ongoing clean-up efforts in East Palestine, Ohio, the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency has launched an online train derailment dashboard in coordination with other relevant state agencies to better inform concerned residents in western Pennsylvania.

“As clean-up efforts continue, our agency wants to make sure residents had an easily accessible online resource containing accurate and relevant information to refer to if they have questions,” said PEMA Director Randy Padfield. “Our priority continues to be ensuring that every concerned resident has the information and resources they need to make important health and safety decisions for their families.”

Air and water monitoring has been in place since the incident began, including during the controlled vent and burn, the fire afterward and in the days since. Thus far, no concerning readings have been detected and state agencies and testing will continue for the foreseeable future.

The online dashboard is accessible at https://www.pema.pa.gov/derailment or by visiting the PEMA homepage at pema.pa.gov and clicking on “Train Derailment Dashboard.”

Free School Breakfast! Free School Breakfast!

Students in all grade levels are able to receive a free school breakfast. This breakfast is not paid for by the school district, rather, it is an initiative of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. We encourage students to start the day with the "most important meal!"

A reminder...

We remind students, employees, parents, guardians, and community members that smoking, the possession or use of alcohol or other drugs, and the possession of weapons on school grounds, including outdoor athletic areas, by any individual, is prohibited. These acts are subject to police action and must also be reported to the Department of Education.

IT IS ILLEGAL TO ENTER A SCHOOL BUS WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION

Student and employee safety is extremely important to us. We are constantly looking for ways to make our schools, school grounds, and property safe for all. Recently, we ordered signage that will be placed on all of our school busses, warning that unauthorized boarding will be subject to criminal prosecution. This is not something new, it is simply something we are creating a greater awareness of.

According to the Pennsylvania Crimes Code:

§ 5517. Unauthorized school bus entry. (a) Offense defined.--A person who enters a school bus without prior authorization of the driver or a school official with intent to commit a crime or disrupt or interfere with the driver or a person who enters a school bus without prior authorization of the driver or a school official who refuses to disembark after being ordered to do so by the driver commits a misdemeanor of the third degree. (b) Notice.--A school district may place a notice at the entrance of the school bus that warns against unauthorized entry.

Buildings and Grounds Concern Form

Our school district prides itself on providing the best possible learning environment for our students, and school buildings and other facilities that can be a source of pride for the community. We are constantly monitoring the conditions of our schools, athletic complexes and other district-owned property but sometimes we miss things. You can help us by completing this form when you notice something that you think needs our attention. It can be something as basic as noticing that there is a light out in our parking areas, or that the trash receptacles at the baseball field need emptied. Just like you have for your home, we have a running list of items that need our attention. These items get prioritized and acted upon. We may already know about the issue you raise, but if we don't, we can't prioritize it until we do. We are all in this together and your input is greatly appreciated.
