February 2019

Carver ElementarySchool February 2019

Dear Parents & Guardians,

Term 3 is just around the corner and although we have had a mild winter, hopefully warmer weather will be here also. Please plan to connect with your child's teacher regarding parent/teacher conferences which are scheduled for March 14th.

Additionally, we are excited to let you know about the implementation of our new Tiered System of Support for Social Emotional Learning here at Carver Elementary School! Over two decades of research has helped us understand the important role social and emotional skills play in each child’s success in school, in the community, and, eventually, in higher education and the workplace. Skills such as demonstrating self-control, persisting at challenging tasks, making good decisions, and working well in groups are all necessary to being successful students and adults.

As part of this program, our teachers will be using a tool called the Devereux Student Strengths Assessment, or DESSA, which was developed by the Devereux Center for Resilient Children. This tool asks teachers to rate how often a student has demonstrated specific social and emotional skills in the past month.

The purpose of the DESSA is to identify which social and emotional skills your child has already learned and what skills he or she might still need to develop. The results of this tool will be used to provide students with social skill building and supports to help them engage in positive learning experiences. For additional information, please contact me at the school.

Sincerely,

Ruby C. Maestas

Winter Weather and Outdoor Recess

Each day we will do our best to get the students outdoors for a recess break. We will always be mindful of the outdoor temperatures and it if the 'feels like' temperature is below 20 degrees we will stay inside. Please remember to send your child to school with a winter coat, a hat and mittens or gloves.
