Cultural Corner – May Around the World
May is a lively month filled with cultural celebrations and meaningful observances across the globe. In Japan, Golden Week features a string of holidays celebrating nature, children, and the nation’s history. Mexico marks Cinco de Mayo on May 5 with music, food, and festivities, commemorating the Battle of Puebla. Across Europe and parts of Asia, May Day (May 1) is celebrated with parades and festivals that honor workers and the arrival of spring. In India, Buddha Purnima is observed as a sacred day reflecting on the life and teachings of Buddha. The United States celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month throughout May, highlighting the diverse cultures and contributions of these communities. At the end of the month, Americans observe Memorial Day, a solemn and respectful holiday to honor the men and women who died in military service to the country. Whether through festivals or remembrance, May is a time to reflect, celebrate, and connect with cultures around the world.
