Principal's Update
Good Morning Memorial Families,
The school year is in full swing! Students are learning school routines and coming to school ready to learn. We held our first all school meeting on Friday, and it continues to be a highlight of my month! In this month’s meeting, we celebrated September birthdays and learned more about our acronym, RISE. Students were introduced to our new positive office referrals, that highlight moments of demonstrating RISE, and now also celebrating when students are practicing the Portrait of a Learner skills. In the space below this update, there is a copy of the PoL competencies, written in child-friend “I can...” statements. I encourage you to display these at home and promote the development of these crucial life-long skills.
I had hoped that this message would be my first that would introduce all of you to our safety drills. This week we planned to complete our second safety drill; a lockdown. Because of the events of last week, this will actually be the fourth drill that your children will experience. This will, however, be the first lockdown drill. Ahead of our first practice, teachers will be sharing information about how we prepare and respond to different types of emergencies in a way that is age-appropriate. We complete several of these drills each year, and most students do not even really notice the difference between this and a drill such as a fire drill. A However, if there is anything that you are concerned about as a parent, or if you have something you’d like to share, please reach out to me at wbell@mursd.org and I will be happy to speak with you further.
I would also like to direct your attention to our parent/student handbook. In it, you will find information about many of our school procedures. This year, we have added in a section with cell phone guidelines for students. Over the past few years we there have been more instances of having to manage student devices in school. This could be a cell phone, a personal iPad, and even smartwatches. Please take some time to review our guidelines for bringing a personal device to school, and also understand that when you send a child in with these types of items, there is always the risk that they will lose it.
I hope that it is a positive and wonderful week ahead.
Warmly,
Wendy
