Agency Agency

Helping Our Students Find Their Voice: Building Agency and Self-Advocacy

As school counselors, we are continually inspired by our students’ growth, not just academically, but in how they understand themselves and communicate their needs. One key part of this development is agency: the ability for children to recognize what they need, express it clearly, and take part in choices that matter to them.

Why Agency Matters

Research shows that when we invite children to participate in decisions about their learning and interactions, it strengthens their sense of confidence and engagement. Studies on student voice and agency highlight that active involvement, asking questions, reflecting on learning, or offering input, leads to observable benefits in classroom engagement and socio-emotional development.

Additionally, research on social-emotional learning (SEL) programs, which include communication and self-advocacy skills, finds positive outcomes such as improved social behavior and long-term academic growth when kids practice real SEL skills (like expressing needs or problem-solving) rather than just hearing about them.

What This Means at Home & School

Helping children build agency doesn’t require big moments, it grows in everyday interactions:

  • Listen with intention when your child shares something important.

  • Encourage them to use “I feel” or “I need” statements, even in small situations.

  • Offer choices when appropriate to build decision-making practice.

  • Model calm, clear communication when expressing your own needs.

These small steps help children practice communication skills that lead to greater confidence and independence.

Supporting Our Students Together

In school counseling, we work with students through classroom lessons, check-ins, and small groups to help them:

  • identify their feelings and needs,

  • practice respectful communication,

  • and develop strategies to advocate for themselves in class and with peers.

Every child learns at their own pace, and our goal is always to meet them where they are, with compassion and encouragement.

Thank you for partnering with us to help your child grow into a confident communicator and self-advocate. If you’d like more ideas or support around these skills, please reach out!

Circle of Control Circle of Control

Reminding students of the things they have control over can be helpful when they grow frustrated with all the things that are outside of their control. This practice also helps build Agency by reminding students take responsibility for the choices DO have in life.

The Anxious Generation Update The Anxious Generation Update

Collective action works — and it’s happening fast:

  • States are adopting phone-free school policies.
  • Parents are banding together to delay smartphones and social media.
  • Kids are playing outside again and rediscovering real friendships.
  • Teachers are reporting calmer classrooms, deeper attention, and actual conversations at the lunch table.
  • And Gen Z is taking charge — speaking openly about what’s broken and how to fix it.

This is the start of “the amazing generation.”
