Instructional Strategies to Try: Instructional Strategies to Try:

5-3-1 5-3-1

5-3-1 Strategy

How It Works:

1. Alone: Students independently brainstorm five responses or ideas related to a question or topic.

2. Pair: Students share their lists with a partner and agree on the three strongest responses.

3. Group: The pair joins another pair, and together they select the single most important idea.

When to Use:

The 5-3-1 strategy can be used at any point in a lesson to promote discussion and collaboration, such as:

  • Before new content: Activate prior knowledge.
  • After a reading: Spark discussion on key ideas.
  • During a lesson preview: Explore responses to a guiding question.
  • When analyzing texts or media: Identify the main idea.

This strategy encourages critical thinking, collaboration, and consensus-building among students.

3-2-1

Students list 3 main points (or 3 "somethings"), 2 ideas (or two things they disagree with or 2 things they found interesting), and 1 question related to the key concept or learning.
