🌊 Next Week in Third Grade
Our new guiding question will be: “Why and how do scientists explore the sea?”
Students will:
- Listen to Ocean Sunlight by Molly Bang and ask/answer questions to deepen comprehension.
- Use both words and illustrations from the text to build understanding.
- Create a color illustration showing information about the ocean’s layers.
- Complete a graphic organizer to identify the main idea and key details of Ocean Sunlight: How Tiny Plants Feed the Seas.
- Write and label a summary of the text.
- Take a Mid-Module Vocabulary Quiz to demonstrate their growing knowledge of academic and content words.
Math
Standard Focus: 3.PAR.3
"Use part-whole strategies to solve real-life, mathematical problems involving multiplication and division with whole numbers within 100."
What This Means for Your Child
This standard helps students understand multiplication n not just as facts to memorize, but as tools to solve real-world problems.
For example:
-
If 6 baskets hold 5 apples each, students learn to see that 6 groups of 5 = 30 apples.
Why This Is Important
-
Builds a strong foundation for problem solving.
-
Helps students connect multiplication to everyday life.
-
Strengthens critical thinking and number sense.
What It Looks Like in Class
-
Word Problems: Students practice solving multiplication problems in real-world contexts (sharing items, making equal groups, arrays).
-
Visual Models: Students use drawings, arrays, and number lines to represent problems.
-
Fact Fluency: Students continue practicing multiplication facts within 100.
How You Can Help at Home
âś… Practice Skip Counting: Count by 2s, 3s, 4s, etc., during car rides or walks.
âś… Play Multiplication Games: Use flash cards, dice, or online games to make fact practice fun.
✅ Connect to Real Life: Cooking, shopping, and chores often involve multiplication —invite your child to help!-
Science/Social Studies
Every 6 weeks we will switch between Science and Social Study standards. We will continue this week with science learning about Fossils!
Reading Specialist
Welcome back, 3rd grade students and families! My name is Mrs. Amanda Montgomery and I will be one of your child's Reading Specialists for this year. I am excited to start this school year by getting to know all of your child's strengths and then making a plan to help them grow as readers. Please do not hesitate to email me (amontgomery@marietta-city.k12.ga.us) or call, if you have any questions or concerns. This is going to be a great year of growth.
3rd grade will start their beginning of the year literacy assessments on August 4th. This process will take about 3 weeks to complete and it is very important for your child to be at school, ready to give their best! Thank you for all you do at home to support us here at school.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Amanda Montgomery
IRR
I am an interrelated special education teacher; I will co-teach in Mrs. Baker and Ms. Castillo’s classrooms this school year. This is my second year teaching, and I am so excited to be teaching 3rd grade again at Park Street! If your child is in Mrs. Baker or Ms. Castillo’s homeroom and has an IEP, I will be their case manager this year. I will be your contact person regarding your child’s IEP needs. Please know that I am here to support your child and communicate with necessary staff information for the implementation of your child’s IEP. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
