State Senator Visit
On Thursday, October 30th, Senators Byron Pelton and the Chair of the Senate Education Committee, Senator Chris Kolker, along with representatives from the Colorado Rural Schools Alliance, visited the Akron School District. The administration team took them on a tour of the building and shared the great work that is happening at our school. The group visited Lone Star, Akron, Merino, Prairie, Ft. Morgan, and Weldon Valley during the day. A group discussion and lunch were held at the Merino school with several area rural superintendents in attendance, including Mr. Christensen. The purpose of the school tours was to see some of the great work happening in our rural schools and to also hear about the challenges schools and school leaders are facing.
Healthy School Meals for All
Propositions MM and LL were passed by voters in the recent election, which allows the Healthy School Meals for All program to raise and retain additional funding. This means there will be no changes to our breakfast or lunch program this year. All students will continue to have access to a free, nutritious breakfast and lunch each school day.
Even though meals are free for all students, we ask that families continue to provide household income information by completing the FEDs form. This information helps schools receive full federal funding, which directly supports meal programs, after school programs and other nutrition initiatives. Please contact Samara Pickens at 970-345-2266 for more information on how to complete the FEDS form.
Akron Building Trades Class Roofing Project
This week our building trades students, led by Mr. Larry Johnson, took part in a partnership with Blue Peaks Roofing, Atlas Shingles , and Apex Roofing. Blue Peaks Roofing, who will be completing a roof replacement on the school in the next year, provided training and supplies for the students and shingles that were donated by Atlas Shingles. Josh Bales of Apex Roofing joined in the partnership providing support, as well as a truck and dump trailer for the disposal of the old shingles. The school media class is documenting this project and partnership with video drone footage. The hope is to promote these types of partnerships to help support the continued connection between business and schools to provide students with workforce readiness skills and skills for life.
