Boulevard weekly Update
1 Person 1% Better Everyday
📆 This Week at a Glance
Greetings Boulevard Families,
It has been a productive and engaging week at Boulevard! Across all grade levels, students demonstrated strong effort, collaboration, and growth in their learning. Below is a snapshot of what students have been working on, along with ways families can support learning at home.
Kindergarten
What Students Are Learning:
Kindergarten students engaged in a literacy lesson using a Wonders text, where they analyzed images and captions to deepen comprehension. They compared close-up and far-away photos, strengthening observation skills and using visual details to better understand text. Students also applied phonics and spelling knowledge through sentence writing, using what they observed to describe differences in images of homes.
State Standard:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.K.7 – With prompting and support, describe the relationship between illustrations and the text in which they appear.
Parent Tip:
When reading with your child, pause to look closely at pictures. Ask: “What do you notice?” and “How does this picture help you understand the story?” This builds comprehension and attention to detail.
2nd Grade
What Students Are Learning:
Second graders participated in a blended literacy block, beginning with independent practice on Lexia to strengthen phonics and word pattern recognition. They then transitioned into a structured 95% Phonics routine using whiteboards, where they practiced encoding and decoding words in an interactive, hands-on way.
State Standard:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.2.3 – Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
Parent Tip:
Have your child practice spelling and reading words aloud. Encourage them to “tap out” sounds or write words on paper or a whiteboard to reinforce phonics patterns.
4th Grade
What Students Are Learning:
Fourth graders are in “Boot Camp” mode preparing for the Ohio State Test. This week, students focused on place value, rounding to the nearest 100,000, comparing large numbers, and solving multi-digit addition problems with and without regrouping. Students used whiteboards to show their thinking and check for accuracy, promoting active engagement and immediate feedback.
State Standard:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NBT.A.3 – Use place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NBT.B.4 – Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
Parent Tip:
Give your child real-life number practice—ask them to round numbers you see (prices, distances, populations) or solve quick addition problems to build confidence and fluency.
5th Grade
What Students Are Learning:
Fifth graders engaged in a thoughtful read-aloud experience, using Snow White as a foundation for deeper thinking. Students predicted what might happen next in the story and discussed character motivations, themes, and story elements such as good vs. evil and the role of magic in fairy tales. Through discussion, students analyzed characters’ choices and considered whether characters are entirely “good” or “evil,” building critical thinking and comprehension skills.
State Standard:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.5.2 – Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text, including how characters respond to challenges.
Parent Tip:
After reading a story at home, ask your child: “What lesson did the character learn?” or “Was the character always making good choices?” This encourages deeper thinking about theme and character development.
We are incredibly proud of our 4th and 5th grade students for their hard work during Ohio State Testing (OST) this week. Students demonstrated strong focus, perseverance, and took their time to do their very best. Their effort and commitment were evident, and we appreciate your support in helping them come prepared each day.
Next week, students will complete Part 2 of the Science assessment, and we will also administer make-up testing for any students who were unable to complete the Math assessment or Part 1 of Science. Please take a moment to review the testing schedule to ensure your child is prepared and present.
Congratulations to Mrs. Walker, Ms. Cahn, and Mrs. Bradley’s classes for earning our secret celebration! These classes had 100% of their students present and on time for testing, which is a significant accomplishment. We appreciate their collective effort and commitment to success.
Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting our students. We are proud of the effort and growth we see every day at Boulevard.
Have a wonderful and safe weekend!
