PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Looks like Fall has arrived, at least for this week, as temps are expected to rise again next week into the mid-70s.

DON’T FORGET YOUR MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS. The packages have been mailed and the on-line renewal capability has been opened up. No excuses to not get this done before the Holiday season sets in and we all get very busy. Also, if you have been an associate member for at least a year and live in Georgia please consider becoming a regular member and having a vote in what we do as a club.

Please plan to attend the general meeting on November 11th. We have some associate members that will have their second reading to become regular members and we need to plan for the February 2025 Specialty and the Puppy Picnic in March 2025.

Remember the Holiday luncheon will be at our house on December 29th as we had a lot of discussion on not getting too close to Christmas and working around the various shows at the beginning of the month and this date seemed like the best opportunity for most members to participate.

Lastly, don’t forget to submit any achievements your pups have earned since last year (any title recognized by the AKC) so we can announce them at the holiday luncheon and publish them in the December newsletter (December 15th deadline, but the sooner the better).

Have a Happy Halloween.

Thanks -

Jim

2024 HOLIDAY LUNCHEON INFORMATION

Our Holiday Luncheon will have a day and place for this year! Please plan to join us on Sunday December 29, 2024 from 1pm to 4pm. This year we will have the luncheon at the home of club president, Jim Utych.

Please note the DATE. It is AFTER the Christmas holiday due to the way the calendar fell this year for the AKC National. Several of our club members will be attending the National so we did not want to hold the luncheon on the 15th . The 8th conflicted with another local dog show and the board felt that the 22nd was too close to the holiday. So we will keep the holiday spirit flowing!

Hopefully next year we can secure the Five Paces Inn again for our 2025 Holiday Luncheon.

This year, we will be serving up baked ham and ask that you bring a side to share with everyone.

It’s a jam packed afternoon of door prizes, white cavalier gift exchange, awards and thank you’s, plus some great food and of course our UGLY SWEATER contest where a $25 buck gift certificate and bragging rights are up for grabs! Each year more and more members attend this fun event

and we hope that you can this year!

We also will be collecting donations of food (cat and dog), cat litter, stainless steel bowls, bleach, detergent, etc. for the Pickens County Rescue Ranch, a no kill shelter in Jasper GA. Please be sure to bring an item or a gift card to Petsmart, Walmart for the staff to use to help purchase food for the Rescue Ranch. Our club member Susan Kent devotes many hours each week to the Ranch and let’s show them how much the club supports everything they do.

We will also be recognizing several 5 year members and two 20 year members! We hope that these folks will attend to receive their certificates and awards in person! If you are one of these members, you were sent a special additional evite invitation from club president Jim Utych inviting you to attend to accept your award. Please take a moment to check your emails to RSVP!

NEW TITLE HOLDERS FOR 2024

Has your cavalier achieved a new title in 2024? Celebrate it and share the news with the club! Titles can be conformation, performance, obedience, trick dog, CGG, therapy, rally, agility, etc. We will list all the new titles in our December newsletter and also recognize them at the Holiday Luncheon! Send your information (dog’s name, title achieved) to Sharon Utych at utych@earthlink.net.

CKCSCGA CALENDAR: MODELS REQUESTED

We are looking to see if there is interest in members submitting photos of their cavaliers (they have to be a good jpg quality) and also be willing to purchase a 2025 hanging medium sized calendar.

The calendar information is:

  • Medium: 8.5”l x 11”w
  • Printed on sturdy high-quality paper with vibrant full-color, full-bleed printing
  • Wire binding

The cost to purchase would probably be $30. It would include the paypal processing fee and shipping. The club would not really be making anything off these but we would not be losing money as a club as Sharon would pre purchase these and eat any loss (if there is one) and the club would benefit from any small profit.

If you are interested in purchasing and having your cavalier spotlighted on one of the month's pages, send Sharon a good quality JPG no later than Oct 31 to my alternate email address: thefinnickyskye@gmail.com.In the subject line please put: 2025 CKCSCGA Calendar submission.

REMEMBERING MEMBERS

It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of two former members.

Anne James, age 85, of Vestavia Hills, AL, passed away on September 28, 2024. She was a longtime member of our club, and had a passion for her dogs.

Denise Newlon, age 68, from Livonia, Michigan, passed away peacefully September 30, 2024, from the horrible enemy of cancer. She was a member of our club, a breeder, showed, and was a strong advocate for our beloved breed.

Both Anne and Denise will be greatly missed.

DEKALB CO OVERREACHING ANIMAL ORDINANCE DEFERRED UNTIL DECEMBER

Copied from email sent on October 11, 2024 by AKC Government Relations Department

Please share this information with animal owners in DeKalb County, Georgia.

The DeKalb County Board of Commissioners deferred until December 2024 action on problematic animal ordinance #2024-0190. Among numerous concerns, the proposed ordinance could negatively affect residents who, in the future, might have reason to give away, sell, or transfer a dog or cat. It also contains vague and overreaching provisions regarding litter permits, home inspections, and ineffective consumer protection language that does not include proper due process for either a pet buyer or seller.

Click here to view AKC’s previous alert that discussed concerns with the proposed ordinance.

It is important for commissioners to continue to hear from constituents with concerns about this vague and overreaching proposal.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Click here to identify your commissioner and their contact information. Please note that two seats are currently vacant and new commissioners will be elected in November. Contact DeKalb County commissioners and ask them to VOTE NO on Ordinance #2024-0190.

Please contact AKC Government Relations at

or call

for additional information.

SPORTS CORNER: OBEDIENCE

This month I talked to Brenda Boesel of Hampton, VA. She has two black and tan cavaliers, Otto & Radar from “the palindrome” litter (12-02-21) - their names are the same backward and forward! (How cool is that!!) She has been competing in obedience since 1989 - with shelties, flat-coats, and now cavaliers. It has been a joy watching her perform with her cavaliers and watching how much she's accomplished in such a short time. Don't let anyone tell you cavaliers can't do obedience!!

Beth: What is the sport of obedience?

Brenda: For me, the sport of Obedience is a perfectly choreographed routine between dog and handler where both have attention on each other and nothing else in the area matters including the judge.

Beth: I often hear people say that obedience is either too boring or too hard. What would you say to those comments?

Brenda: I say that Obedience IS hard! It takes a lot of dedication to the sport with the main focus being on attention. It is also important to break down exercises into their smallest parts so the dog understands each step of the exercise instead of just the sum of the parts.

Beth: Why do you do obedience? Do your dogs like it? What do they like about it?

Brenda: The most fun part of obedience is teaching the dog using games, treats and praise. I do believe in using a balanced approach to obedience where the dog understands consequences for his actions. This is very important for people who train big dogs so the dog is not menacing to other competitors and also important for small dogs so they can compete safely. Nobody wants to see a dog run amok in training or at a trial where safety can be compromised. It would be my hope that more people compete after the Novice level. It does take time and patience to compete in Open and Utility but the feeling of accomplishing those titles is something a handler will never forget.

I think my dogs like doing obedience because we get to spend time together practicing focusing on each other. They get very excited when they do tasks well and I show them joy with a big smile and a bunch of praise.

Beth: Do cavaliers make good obedience dogs generally? Why or why not?

Brenda: It has been my experience that cavaliers make excellent obedience dogs. I began teaching my puppy behaviors to make him successful in obedience and in rally as soon as I got him home and we practice those behaviors on a regular basis during every day life and not just as ring tricks. My boy is always happy in the ring competing. He wags his tail the entire time. Sometimes he gets off track between exercises because the judge looks inviting to go play with but that’s OK because it lets me know that he is well socialized and confident. I wish that more people would take the leap into obedience with their cavaliers because they certainly have the personality for it.

Beth: What’s next for your obedience journey?

Brenda: I took a different path with my cavalier in Obedience than the standard progression. I decided to train him through the Open exercises and some Utility exercises before I entered Novice. I did several Beginner Novice trials with him just to have ring exposure. Once I felt confident that he could do Open exercises I took the Preferred track in obedience and we achieved our PCD. Since completing our PCD, I started entering him in the Optional titling class of Graduate Novice and once we complete that title I will move him into the Preferred Open class. I want him to have as much ring time as I can give him before I go into the traditional Novice class. Once we complete that goal I plan on showing him in Open and Utility.

Beth: How would someone go about getting involved in the sport?

Brenda: The internet is a great resource for online training programs if a handler does not have access to in-person training. I would recommend if a person wants to do obedience that they tell their breeder what they would like to achieve and hopefully that breeder would pick a puppy with a good personality and temperament for the sport. I would watch different YouTube videos from different trainers and see what style fits you and your dog’s personality. I would also purchase puppy training videos before bringing your puppy home so you can get started right away. Watch the videos all the way through to the end so you can get a feel of how the progression will go.

Thank you, Brenda, for sharing your journey with us! I can't wait to continue watching your successes in the ring and learning from you!

NATURAL REMEDIES

KILL AND REPEL FLEAS NATURALLY

Coconut oil kills and repels fleas due to the ingredient lauric acid. This solution can be rubbed through your pet's coat or given to them orally. A bonus: Coconut oil moisturizes the skin and helps kill yeast, too.

zoom_out_map

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Peanut Butter Coconut Oil Dog Treats

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-natural peanut butter
  • 1 teaspoon unprocessed coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • silicon paw print tray

Instructions

  • Be sure the coconut oil is in liquid form. If not, place coconut oil in a small saucepan over medium-low heat and cook until melted.

  • Add peanut butter and cinnamon. Stir until mixture is completely smooth and thoroughly mixed. The mixture should be thick, but pourable.

  • Pour mixture into a tray and freeze until set.

  • Carefully remove from tray and store in an air-tight container in the freezer (they soften quickly).

Notes

These were made for dogs in the 10-15 pound range. Adjust the amount of coconut oil accordingly. Rule of thumb is that you use 1 teaspoon of coconut oil per 10 pounds of your dog's body weight. One treat per day will do the trick.
