Off Season Mock Build!

As we get ready for the exciting new FRC season, our team is kicking off a mock build project centered around the popular 2019 FRC game, Deep Space! For those unfamiliar, Deep Space is a unique and challenging game where robots must navigate a simulated alien terrain, loading spherical "cargo" and securing flat "hatch panels" onto rockets and cargo ships—against the clock and other teams. Each of these game elements requires carefully designed mechanisms and effective strategy, making it an ideal practice ground for our team to sharpen our skills.

Our goal for this mock season is to go through every step of a real build season, starting from CAD design, moving through construction and assembly, and finally, programming. To add to the challenge, we’re designing an advanced elevator mechanism, inspired by the top-performing robots from the original Deep Space season. This elevator will enable our robot to lift and secure cargo at multiple levels—an essential skill for success in the game, where reaching different heights quickly and accurately can make or break a team’s score.

But it’s more than just a practice exercise; it’s a comprehensive experience for every team member. Veterans get to explore new ideas and teach valuable skills, while newer members gain hands-on experience and a solid grasp of how FRC build seasons operate. The experience in problem-solving, precision, and teamwork we gain from this mock build is invaluable, setting us up for success in the upcoming season. We’re thrilled to take on this mock build as we push our creative and technical limits, preparing for the excitement and unknowns of the new FRC game.

Be sure to follow along in our upcoming newsletters as we tackle Deep Space and bring our elevator-equipped robot to life—one exciting step closer to a stellar 2025 season! 🚀

Off Season Events

Our teams recently wrapped up two fantastic off-season events—the New England Robotics Derby (NERD) and River Rage. These competitions not only gave us a chance to sharpen our skills but also to foster team spirit and build on our connections with other teams across New England!

At NERD, held at Billerica Memorial High School, Team 1153 made a strong showing. Finishing qualifications in 5th place, they brought intensity and precision to every match. Our drive team was driver Mayank Shah, with Hersh Mepani as the operator. In these final rounds, Team 1153 had the privilege of teaming up with alliance partners Team 1058 - PVC Pirates, Team 8626 - Cyber Sailors, and Team 97 - Bionic Beef. Together, our alliance executed a well-coordinated playoff strategy, and Team 1153 brought back valuable lessons and experience to prepare for the season ahead.

Just a couple of weeks later, we geared up for River Rage, hosted by Manchester Memorial High School. This time, both Team 1153 and Team 1119 (our Pup Cups) took to the field. Team 1153 placed 13th in qualifications, with an all-star drive team led by driver Hersh Mepani, operator Matthew “High Note” Brown, and second operator Tanay Singh. Team 1153 pushed through playoffs with the support of our dedicated alliance members, Team 131 - CHAOS and Team 1073 - The Force Team. Together, they tackled each match with determination and skill.

On the other hand, Team 1119 made an impressive appearance at River Rage, finishing qualifications in 12th place and slightly edging out their sister team, 1153. The Pup Cups' drive team included driver Kai Greer, operator Cole Howard, and human player Ryan Li. In playoffs, Team 1119 worked seamlessly with Team 811 - The Wild Cards and Team 151 - Tough Techs, each match showcasing the Pup Cups' creativity and perseverance on the field.

Adding to the excitement, River Rage took place the weekend before Halloween, so our teams embraced the holiday spirit by dressing up in festive costumes, making this competition not only a technical challenge but a fun-filled event for everyone involved. Many thanks to Billerica Memorial High School and Manchester Memorial High School for hosting these events and to all our alliance partners who joined us on the field. Off-season events like these are invaluable, giving us a head start on driver experience and strategy for the coming season—and we can’t wait to see where these lessons take us next!

FIRST LEGO League Teams

Our LEGO League teams are off to a fantastic start this season, and we couldn’t be more excited! Comprising teams #61395, the Sea Pups; #56346, the Mighty Minnows; and #55822, the Aqua Bots, our young innovators are diving deep into this year's challenge, which focuses on harnessing the power of ocean resources to make the world a better place.

With the annual theme centered around ocean exploration, each team is brainstorming innovative solutions to real-world problems. One team is particularly passionate about kelp farming, exploring how this sustainable resource can be utilized to create everyday items that benefit both people and the environment. Meanwhile, the teams have also begun designing and building attachments for their robots, enabling them to tackle various missions throughout the season.

Our meetings take place at the Walpole Public Library, where we gather every Tuesday from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM and Saturday from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM. This collaborative environment fosters teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving, all essential components of our mission to inspire young minds through STEM education. We aim to provide our students with hands-on experiences that enhance their understanding of robotics and engineering while encouraging them to think critically about how they can contribute to their communities.

Below, you'll find the team logos, each lovingly drawn by the kids themselves, showcasing their creativity and team spirit. Additionally, we are excited to announce that we will have team T-shirts for sale soon. By purchasing a shirt, you can show your support for our young innovators and join us in celebrating their journey as they make waves in the world of STEM!

Massachusetts STEM Teacher Fair

Our team had the opportunity to participate in the Massachusetts Teacher STEM Fair, held at the iconic Gillette Stadium. This event was a fantastic platform for educators from various content areas to explore innovative STEM resources and teaching strategies. We set up a booth to share our passion for robotics and STEM education, showcasing our projects and initiatives aimed at inspiring students.

The fair provided excellent networking opportunities, allowing us to connect with like-minded educators and organizations dedicated to enhancing STEM education in schools. A particularly memorable moment was when we met a representative from NASA. Engaging with someone from such a prestigious organization ignited exciting discussions about the role of STEM in space exploration and how we can inspire the next generation of innovators.

Throughout the day, we shared insights on our programs, distributed information about our robotics teams, and discussed the importance of hands-on learning in developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Overall, our experience at the Massachusetts Teacher STEM Fair was not only productive but also energizing, as we look forward to bringing new ideas and collaborations back to our community!
