WELCOME BACK TO "SCHOOL"!

Welcome back to what will most definitely go down as a unique and historical school year. I know many of you are returning to school (either last week or this week) and doing so in ways that most of us never imagined when we became educators. I want to say that the work you do is VITAL and more important that ever.

More than anything, I think we should all give ourselves GRACE and SPACE as we traverse this school year. Give yourself the grace and space to learn, make mistakes, connect with your students however you can and know that whatever "school" looks like right now and the rest of the year - YOU MATTER!

Please do not hesitate to ever reach out with questions, concerns, ideas or training needs.

It’s okay to throw stuff out. Now’s a good time to rethink a lot of what we’re doing.

It’s okay to throw stuff out. Now’s a good time to rethink a lot of what we’re doing.

This morning, I was poking around in the History Tech archives looking for some research on the best way to integrate literature into social studies instruction. And as often happens, I got sucked down a rabbit hole and ran across a different article I wrote five years ago and forgotten all about. With the uncertainty…

What Should We Memorialize?

What Should We Memorialize?

What have our communities and nation chosen to memorialize and why? These are among the questions that Americans are grappling with in the midst of massive social upheaval and a growing list of instances in which protesters are removing or defacing monuments celebrating historical figures—monuments they feel celebrate racist legacies and signal an ongoing commitment to upholding racism. This wave of direct action has also spread to countries like England and Belgium as their populations reckon with the legacies of racism and colonialism in their own corners of the globe. Facing History invites educators to explore the following lessons on the contested meaning of monuments and historical symbols, as well as how new monuments and symbols have the potential to ground us in narratives that aid repair.

Confronting Bias: Ethics in the Classroom | PBS LearningMedia

Confronting Bias: Ethics in the Classroom | PBS LearningMedia

The Confronting Bias: Ethics in the Classroom collection was created as part of WNET’s Youth Collective. Youth Collective is a Generation Z media and education initiative that aims to amplify youth voice and provide a platform for young people to engage in the important work of building a more ethical world.  The resources in this collection provide teachers with tools to incorporate ethics education in the classroom, promote understanding of differing viewpoints, and foster civil dialogue about bias. The collection is divided into three subcategories; Understanding Bias, Experiencing Bias, and Addressing Bias.  Understanding Bias provides an overview of concepts and frameworks to help educators teach ethical issues in the classroom.  Experiencing Bias features personal narratives of those who have encountered bias, and encourages students to share their own stories and experiences.  Addressing Bias examines the prevailing problems related to bias in today’s society, and the action being done to confront these problems.
