May Board Briefs
Election Results & Appreciation for Voters
We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who participated in this year’s school district budget vote. Your engagement in this process represents an important aspect of our community’s commitment to the future of our schools, students, and taxpayers.
We are grateful for the voter’s overwhelming support of the 2025–26 school budget. Proposition 1 passed with a nearly 75% approval rating, which is a reflection of the value our community places on our schools and opportunities provided to students. Thanks to this support, we can continue to provide quality educational programs and services for our students for the upcoming school year.
Proposition 2 for the Capital Project was not approved. Of the 2,552 voters who weighed in, 54.58% were not in favor of the proposition. We will take time to reflect on the results, review our Exit Poll data, and carefully consider next steps, while continuing to engage the community. We are so appreciative of the level of passion and participation that we have experienced from our community throughout this process. We are committed to continuing to work with our stakeholders as we move forward and hope that everyone will continue to participate. The Board of Education meets again on June 3.
We also extend our congratulations to Jenny Jared and Rory Smith on being elected to three-year terms on the Board of Education. Jenny and Rory will begin their new positions on July 1, 2025. We look forward to welcoming them and are eager to add their voices to our Board discussions.
Once again, thank you for taking part in the vote and election on May 20, and for your continued support of the Onteora Central School District.
Final State Budget Provides Minimal State Aid Increases
Concerns Over Future State Funding Remain
New York State (NYS) adopted its 2025–26 budget on May 9, more than a month past the April 1 deadline. While we are relieved that this year's budget does not include significant reductions to our Foundation Aid, we remain concerned about potential future cuts that would happen under the recommendations outlined in the Rockefeller Institute of Government’s December 2024 report on the Foundation Aid formula.
The 2025 final NYS budget provides the District with only the minimum guaranteed increase in Foundation Aid, which translates to a 2% increase, or approximately $156,356—an amount that does not keep pace with the 3.1% Consumer Price Index (CPI) used in the State’s education funding calculations for 2025–26.
Because of Onteora’s declining enrollment and a high State-calculated Combined Wealth Ratio (CWR), we face a potential loss of Foundation Aid as NYS looks to revise its formula to reallocate funds to districts it determines has higher needs than us.
A loss of Foundation Aid would require significant adjustments to our budget and operations. We are closely monitoring these developments and will continue to advocate for state decisions that prioritize student needs and educational equity across all districts.
Congratulations to Onteora’s Top Students in the Class of 2025!
We are proud to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of three outstanding students: Gavin Rice, Valedictorian of the Class of 2025; Alexia Melendez, Salutatorian; and Coco Asada, this year’s recipient of the Principal’s Award.
These exceptional students have demonstrated excellence both in and out of the classroom, serving as positive role models and leaders in our school and community.
Gavin, a key member of the Rocket Club, helped the team qualify for nationals, and also mentors younger students in engineering. Alexia has led basketball and soccer clinics; has volunteered for the Woodstock Film Festival, the Onteora Athletic Council, and the Belleayre Bash; and has been active in National Honor Society service projects. In our community, Coco works as a ski instructor and barista, teaches flute lessons, and coaches boys’ youth “Goalie Clinics” for soccer.
Congratulations, Gavin, Alexia, and Coco! Your hard work, leadership, and dedication inspire us all. We are incredibly proud of you!
Spring Concerts are in Full Bloom
Onteora’s talented musicians have been showcasing their impressive skills this month through a series of spring concerts! Friends, family, staff, and community members were treated to outstanding performances at the Middle School on May 14 (for a real treat, check out the incredible rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody that begins at 1:06) and the High School on May 21. If you couldn’t attend in person, you can still enjoy the concert recordings, which are available on YouTube.
Students from Bennett and Woodstock Elementary Schools in Grades 3 and 4 Band, Orchestra, and Chorus—as well as the combined Grades 3–5 Chorus—will perform at the High School on May 29. The Grade 5 Band and Orchestra will take the stage on June 10 at Bennett Elementary School. These performances are especially noteworthy, as they highlight the impressive progress of our youngest musicians from Woodstock and Bennett, who are completing their first year in our newly expanded music program.
One of the things that truly sets our District apart is its music program—made exceptional by the passion and dedication of our outstanding music teachers, along with our community’s continued support of the arts through investment in the school budget. From Orchestra, Band, and Chorus to Jazz Band, Concert Choir, Wind Ensemble, and more, our students have countless opportunities to connect with their peers, showcase their talents, and share their music. Many also represent the District at local and regional competitions and festivals, demonstrating both their skill and their spirit.

A Familiar Face in a New Place: Liz Fallo Takes Helm at Onteora Middle School
At the May 20 Board of Education meeting, we approved the temporary appointment of Liz Fallo as Acting Principal of Onteora Middle School.
Ms. Fallo has been a familiar and respected member of the Onteora community since joining the District in 2016. She has brought a wealth of knowledge, experience, and dedication to every role she has held. She is currently serving as the Coordinator of the District’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) program. Prior to that, she was Principal of Phoenicia Elementary School from 2020 to 2024, and she also served as the District’s Assistant Director of Pupil Personnel Services, where she worked closely with families through the Committee on Special Education (CSE) process.
Our middle school students are in excellent hands with Ms. Fallo at the helm. Her leadership will ensure the continued success of the school as we begin the process of filling the position permanently.
Ms. Fallo succeeds James DiDonna, who has recently left Onteora to pursue a new opportunity in another district.
