College & Career Chronicles

Check it out! Do you see the pennant of your future college?
Grand Canyon University
In the past 15 years, the university has grown exponentially from 900 students on-campus in 2008 to almost 26k on-campus and 90k online learners! The university also just started offering a pre-apprenticeship program for electricians and is currently planning to open 80 facilities throughout the nation to educate students to go into healthcare which includes nursing.
The university was voted the 17th best campus in the nation by Niche. It offers a robust list of student events including an annual lip sync battle, GCU's Got Talent, midnight breakfast during finals, and snow much fun where the university brings snow to the desert campus during the holidays. The campus boasts 7 pools, 7 fitness facilities, and 32 restaurants (all of which the students can use their meal plans). In addition, ESPN has dubbed GCU's arena one of the top three arenas for basketball (Division I).
Though a student does not need to be Christian to attend GCU and does not have to participate in Christian activities, Christianity is prevalent throughout the campus. A student should take that into account when making a college decision. If you do wish to apply to GCU and get accepted, the university offers a fly-in opportunity called Discover GCU where they fly you in at no cost to you. This is a wonderful way to get a feel for campus and if you could see yourself living there.
If you have any questions about Grand Canyon University, Ms. Stevie would be happy to share more information that she has learned during her 2 day stay!

Trade Highlight of the Month - Massage Therapist
Massage therapists treat clients by using touch and pressure to manipulate the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia of the body. They aid in the general wellness of a client by relieving pain, rehabilitating injuries, reducing stress, and increasing relaxation.
The average base salary of a massage therapist is $37.64. However, Oregon is listed as a state where massage therapists earn more and typically makes 9% more than the national average.
Types of Massage Therapists
- Deep tissue massage: Widely used to treat chronic aches and pains, deep tissue massage targets areas of tension or tightness by applying concentrated pressure to the sub-layer of muscles and fascia, the connective tissue that surrounds your muscles.
- Hot stone massage: The techniques of a regular massage are applied. However, the therapist also works with hot stones, typically basalt, that are placed on specific parts of the body or held in the therapists hands to allow the therapist to get deeper into the muscles without more pressure.
- Medical massage: In addition to stress relief and relaxation, a medical massage focuses on a medical need. It is often used to manage pain, reduce inflammation, improve circulation, relieve nerve compression, improve digestion, increase flexibility or treat other health care concerns. The therapist may use a broader set of modalities, such as Trigger Point Therapy or Myofascial Release, to offer health recovery.
- Prenatal massage: Prenatal massage addresses different needs through varying techniques. Swedish Massage is the recommended massage method during pregnancy because it addresses many common discomforts associated with the skeletal and circulatory changes brought on by hormone shifts.
- Sports massage: Sports massage releases and reduces tension in muscles, improves circulation and encourages the removal of waste products such as lactic acid during high intensity activity and can help to relax the body.
- Swedish massage: This classic massage technique offers a gentle way to promote relaxation by releasing muscle tension.
Becoming a Massage Therapist
Interested in exploring a massage therapy program? According to the Oregon State Board of Massage Therapists, the state of Oregon requires a total of 625 educational hours related to massage. Of these, 200 hours must be in the health sciences, including Anatomy, Physiology, Kinesiology, and Pathology while 300 hours must be in Massage Theory and Practical Application, Clinical Practice, Business Development, Sanitation, Communication, and Ethics.

Did You Know?
OSAC Scholarship and The Ford Family Scholarship applications are OPEN!
The OSAC Scholarship Application is a common application that supports between 500-600 scholarships each year. These scholarships are for Oregon students with each scholarship having it's own criteria and limitations. Some of these scholarships DO allow students to attend college outside of Oregon.
To access the OSAC Scholarship Application, click here
Most high school students will want to apply to the Ford Scholars program, which funds high school graduates who are seeking a bachelor's degree. While the Ford Scholars are very generous financially, the true value in the scholarship comes in the form of ongoing support from The Ford Family Foundation, including a success coach, leadership development and an active alumni network. This scholarship is open to students from Oregon (and Siskiyou County California), and students must attend college or university in their home state. View the flyer below for more information about the Ford Scholars Program.
