Hour of Code and Computer Science Education Week!

Hey, NES Hawks!

Only three more weeks until winter break--woo hoo! Please make sure to check my updated schedule at the bottom of this newsletter to have the most up-to-date schedule of classes and open circulation times. Several things have changed in the past couple of weeks, and I want to make sure your kiddos know when they can come get books.

December 5th-9th is the annual Hour of Code and CSE Week, so this newsletter has lots of resources for you to use in your classrooms to help your kids get coding! Here is an article about the benefits of coding for kids...powerful stuff, so check it out! I will be incorporating some coding activities with students in the library, but I encourage you to check out the resources in this newsletter to also add coding to your in-class lessons over the course of the week.

*******************

If you have students in 2nd-5th grades, please make sure to send them with their Chromebooks EVERY time they have library class. We will be doing more online activities in the coming weeks with Hour of Code and some Internet Safety lessons soon, and I want to make sure everyone can participate.

Dog Man Bookmarks--a Fun DIY!

Do you have old books that are literally falling apart in your classroom library? You can easily turn them into bookmarks for your students! In just a few simple steps, you can have hundreds of bookmarks to share. (From start to finish, making all of the bookmarks you see in this photo took me about 25 minutes.)
1. Remove the book cover.

2. Separate the pages.

3. Cut the pages to your desired size/shape.

4. Enjoy!

This is a great way to repurpose books that may be too raggedy to read, and the kids are LOVING our Dog Man bookmarks, which helps make the most of a damaged book and get a little more life out of it. Try it!

"40 Book Challenge"

Remind your students in grades 3-5 about the 40 Book Challenge! Our goal is to read 40 chapter books over the course of the school year, and I have started filling in my own chart so they can watch it grow throughout the year. This is an optional activity, and some of your students have already picked up their own challenge papers in the library. You can see that I am adding the image of each book cover as I finish each book. This is a great way to show your kids what you are reading if you decide to participate in the 40 Book Challenge, too! Showing your students that YOU are a reader is a powerful way to encourage their reading habits without having to say a thing.

Hey, podcast people! Check this out!

To foster interaction with other librarians and educators around the world, I have recently started my own podcast, and I'm working to share things related to books, libraries, and education on a sort-of-weekly basis. I generally release new episodes on Monday evenings, and sometimes include interviews with special guests. If you enjoy podcasts, or know a librarian or book lover who might enjoy this, please take a listen and feel free to share!
