Cooking up a way to connect families through food
More than 450 students from Hahn Intermediate and Davison Middle School are participating in “Cook to Connect," a project initiated by Paraprofessional Mrs. Lisa Johnson that provided cookbooks to students and their families. The idea behind the program is for each family to pick out a recipe and make it together. Once completed, the student is asked to complete a Recipe Reflections form.
“I am very proud to say that the Cook to Connect project was a huge success,” Mrs. Johnson said. “We had 451 students fill out a ticket to participate and we were able to collect enough books & magazines to fulfill them all. I would like to thank the community for their generosity, notably Turn the Page Used Books who donated many cookbooks from their store and the Genesee District Library. I also wouldn't have been able to pull this off without the help of our Hahn monitors Annie & Rachel as well as Mrs. Gist’s 6th grade class who finished wrapping the last of the books so we could distribute them to the Middle School before break.”
Unfortunately, due to a snow day, Hahn students were unable to claim their wrapped book before break but did claim them once they returned in January.
“I can't wait to see the Recipe Reflections come back and for the students to tell me all about how they connected with family & friends while learning a new recipe,” Mrs. Johnson said.
DTV featured in the news this week
The DTV crew found themselves on the other side of the interview desk this week as reporters from Channel 25 and the Davison Index visited the studio to write stories about the new studio.
Thanks to Davison Index Editor Gary Gould and Mid-Michigan Now (Channel 25) for coming out and doing stories featuring our DTV students and their new digs. You can read/view their respective stories below.
DHS/DAE names students of the month for January
Congratulations to the following students from Davison High School and Davison Alternative Education named as Students of the Month for January.
9th grade: Anna Allswede
Nominated by: Ms. Janey McGlashen
Anna is one of those special students who can always brighten everyone's day. She has the sweetest disposition, is helpful to all those around her, is consistently on task, and performs to the best of her ability on every assignment. Despite having a long holiday break, I didn't quite feel ready to come back to work, and I was looking for that joy that would make it just a bit easier. Anna is who I thought of immediately. As soon as I pictured her enthusiastic, bubbly personality, I was able to get on board. She reminds me of who I want to be to those around me, so I'd like to honor just how much influence she has on those around her. Thank you for being you, Anna!
10th grade: Landon Reaver
Nominated by: Mrs. Lindsay Gokey
Landon is a student that exemplifies the Cardinal Code daily. He works will all students without question. I have witnessed a patience, maturity and kindness towards others that exceeds that of many students his age. I appreciate his willingness to help others without being asked. For these reasons, I believe Landon should be selected as Student of the Month.
11th grade: Sophia Shawl
Nominated by: Mrs. Jennifer Johnson
I have watched Sophia grow into a responsible, hard working, strong young woman these past two years. She has learned to set goals and set boundaries. She has embraced academic success and high expectations and set herself up for success in the future. Her ability to self-reflect and make positive changes in her life has allowed her to turn her high school experience into something meaningful and a way to work toward her future. She looks for ways to fulfill and surpass her potential socially, academically and financially AND she is creative and kind. What a rock star!
12th grade: Makayla Fultz
Nominated by: Mrs. Katie Davis
Makayla is a joy to have in class every day. She has the best personality and always makes the classroom environment fun. Outside of class, I can always depend on Makayla to help out with service projects through the National Honor Society. She is quick to volunteer and wants to make a difference in her community. She is a great representative of her class and a deserving candidate for Student of the Month!
DAE: Emily Hunt
Nominated by: Mrs. Pam Colvin
Emily is always present in class and ready to discuss the topic for the day. She will complete the scheduled work and find something to silently fill in any remaining time. Emily is respectful to staff, even when she does not always receive the answer she wants. Her continuous effort and participation make it a pleasure to have her in class.
