MT's purpose is to educate and empower students to become responsible citizens.
A Few Words From the Principal
I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable Halloween.
November is gratitude month. Gratitude is more than simply saying “thank you.” It is sharing with others the feeling of appreciation for what someone has done or for what they have given you. Gratitude helps not only the person receiving it feel good, but also the person sharing the gratitude. Showing gratitude has the ability to shift us from focusing on the negative to appreciating what is positive around us. Practicing daily gratitude can help us to have a more positive approach and outlook to our days. This month students will be encouraged to show and express gratitude in many different ways.

Attendance Reminders
As cold and flu season ramps up and our lives get busy, please remember to report absences and late arrivals to the school by 8:30 a.m. You may call the school attendance line at 913-422-5854 or use the online absence reporting form. The school will call to follow-up with unreported absences after 8:30. Students arriving tardy after 7:55 must enter through the front office doors (you are not required to escort late students inside, but if your student is late due to an appointment, please report it to the office in advance so their attendance is appropriately marked).
Students are allowed ten (10) days of excused absences per school year without an accompanying doctor’s note. (This includes illnesses, appointments, and “parent request” absences, which should be coordinated with the school in advance). Absences in excess of ten (10) without accompanying documentation will be considered unexcused. Missing a substantial portion of a day (three (3) or more class periods) shall be considered one "day."
You are not required to notify the office in advance if you will be checking a student out during the school day for an appointment. Please have your ID ready at the door, state your student's name and indicate you are checking them out, and complete the student check out inside and we will call your student from class at that time. Students will only be released to parent/guardians or emergency contacts listed in Skyward unless coordinated in advance with the school.
Good Things at MTMS
MT Murder Mystery
Our latest Crime Scene at MT took place in the library last week and this week, just in time for a Halloween scare! Staff helped lend their acting skills to become Halloweeny Suspects.
The kids had to listen closely to the alibi audio recordings, decipher the hidden clues in the images, and critically analyze the crime scenes to make connections between who committed the murder, where it happened, and with what weapon they used. What a fun time the students had becoming Junior CSI’s for the day!
In Reading Extensions class, we received our first whole class Book Club Book and the kids were super excited! They voted for the award-winning book, The Liars Society by Alyson Gerber. Mrs. Ketterling met Alyson a few years back at Litapalooza and was able to get a Live Zoom Q & A session scheduled with her in the upcoming weeks.
6th South Science
Students studied how the amount of water in a film cannister would affect the launch time of an antacid rocket.

Thanksgiving Pies for Staff
While it's still October and Halloween today, Thanksgiving will be here before we know it! A tradition at Monticello Trails is for parents to shower our teachers & staff with pies at Thanksgiving-time as a thank you for their dedication to making MT a great place to learn and work. Each staff member will be sent home on Friday, 11/21 with a pie or dessert to enjoy over the Thanksgiving break. If you can help with bringing a pie or dessert (can be homemade or store-bought), or help with collecting the pies on 11/21, please sign up using this signup genius. Thank you for your support of our great teachers and staff!!
