π Your Attendance Matters
We are starting to see an increase in student absences. Please remember to be calling your student in if you know they will be out. Below is the OASD Board Policy 5200 in regards to Attendance.
Board Policy 5200: Parent/Guardian-Excused Pre-Planned Absence
The student has been excused in writing by their parent/guardian before the absence for any reason. A student may not be excused for more than ten (10) days per school year under this paragraph and must complete any coursework missed during the absence.
Examples of reasons for being absent that should be counted under this paragraph include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Professional and other necessary appointments (e.g., medical, dental, and legal) that cannot be scheduled outside of the school day (a doctor's note is helpful)
2. To attend a funeral
3. Legal proceedings that require the student's presence
4. College visits
5. Job fairs
6. Vacations
Please see the school office for PREPLANNED VACATION forms.
Medical Verification Letters are sent after 10 total days (excused or unexcused) of absence. If no medical excuse is provided, absences are unexcused for the rest of the year. With medical documentation, absences are updated to excused. Extenuating circumstances are reviewed case-by-case.
Tips for Parents/Guardians
- Set attendance goals with your child or track attendance on a calendar
- Help your child get a good nightβs sleep
- Prep the night before and set a morning routine to streamline your morning
- Try to schedule medical or dental appointments before or after school hours
- Schedule trips during school breaks
- Donβt let your child stay home unless they are truly sick
- Talk with your child about the reasons they may not want to go to school
- For students who have chronic health issues, talk with their pediatrician about developing a plan for school
- Know school start times and contact the school if your child will be late or absent
- Encourage your child to get involved with after-school activities
Absences Add Up!
Students who miss only 2 days of school per month starting in kindergartenβ¦
- Will have missed about a MONTH of school by the end of kindergarten
- Will have missed nearly A HALF YEAR of school by the end of 3rd grade
- Will have missed A FULL YEAR of school by the end of 8th grade
- Will have missed OVER A YEAR AND A HALF of school by the end of 12th grade

Outdoor Coat Guidelines
Right now it seems as if Mother Nature cannot make up her mind but it is never too early to start prepairing for the COLD weather! We wanted to make sure to send a reminder of the weather guidelines that we follow for outdoor recess and the types of clothing students should be wearing for recess for the next couple of months.
Students are required to go outside for recess for 25 minutes every day UNLESS the temperature is below 10 degrees or the temperature is 0 degrees with the windchill.
Please make sure to start sending your student to school with the appropriate attire for recess. It is suggested that you have a winter coat, hat, mittens or gloves. Snow pants and boots are not necessary until the snow starts to fly.
Here is suggested coat guidelines:
OASD Hearing & Vision Screening
September through November the health office may screen students in Kindergarten, 2nd and 4th grade for:
β Vision
β Hearing
If our screening identifies a concern you will be notified via phone call from Wisconsin Eye Consultants. If you do not receive anything that means your child passed his/her screening and requires no further action.
If you would like to opt out of these free screenings, please notify your school nurse as soon as possible.

Making sure kids understand what they are reading is key to helping them thrieve as a reader. While they are reading, ask them questions like:

E Cook Staff Spotlight
Mr. Oehler, 5th Grade Teacher
Q1. How many year have you been in OASD?
- 26 Years (Lincoln Elementary, South Park Middle School, North High School, and E.Cook Elementary)
Q2. What was your favorite subject when you were in school?
- Gym & Science
Q3. Who was your favorite elementary school teacher, what grade did they teach, and why were they your favorite?
- Mr. Thompson, 4th Grade. He was my favorite because he was the first teacher I had who truly connected with his students. He would actually join us in our games and play alongside us. When he read books to the class, he made funny voices for the different characters, which made reading fun and memorable. He made learning feel enjoyable and showed us that a teacher could be both a teacher and someone who genuinely enjoyed being with his students.
