Sunset View Newsletter
Week of October 12, 2026
Message from Jennifer
I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend and had a chance to relax and recharge! Last week was definitely a hot one at Sunset View. With temperatures soaring, our students spent the beginning of the week enjoying recess indoors, but thankfully, by Thursday we were able to get everyone back outside for some much-needed fresh air and playtime.
A huge thank you to Michelle Ratcliffe for organizing this year’s Walk and Bike to School Day, one of our beloved Sunset View community traditions! It was wonderful to see so many students and families making their way to school together. An extra-special thank you goes to Alexander Ratcliffe, who truly took one for the team by braving the heat in the McGruff costume! The photo in this week’s newsletter was captured by none other than our own school nurse, Jill Crane, as she patiently waited for her chance to turn onto Hill Street, a perfect view of just how many families came out to participate!
And now, we’re looking ahead to another favorite Sunset View tradition... our Halloween Carnival next weekend! We can’t wait for an evening of costumes, fun, and time together as a community. October is always an exciting month at Sunset View, and we are looking forward to celebrating with all of you!
Student Contracts
Thank you to our families who have been proactive about requesting Independent Study Contracts when students will be away from school for an extended period of time. These contracts are a great way to help students stay connected to their learning while they are away as well as for us to receive funding.
As you plan upcoming travel or extended absences, please remember that students may receive Independent Study Contracts for a maximum of 14 days total during the school year. We also ask that families provide at least two weeks’ notice when requesting a contract. This gives our teachers adequate time to thoughtfully prepare and gather the assignments and materials students will need while they are away.
Thank you for planning ahead and partnering with us to keep our students learning and growing—even when they can’t be at school!

Trait of the month: Belonging 💙
Can you believe it’s already October?! This month, we are focusing on belonging and what it means to help everyone feel welcomed and included at school. In classrooms, I am popping in to discuss friendships, the difference between rude, mean, and bullying behavior, ways to resist bullying, and how to include others. We are practicing the Sunset View Way of including others by noticing who might be left out, inviting others to join, and choosing kindness in our everyday interactions.
Continue the Conversation at Home! Ask your child:
What does it look like to help someone feel like they belong?
What could you do if you notice someone sitting alone or being left out?
How can you stand up for someone or respond if you see someone being treated unkindly?

Reminders
SDUSD Updated Screen Time Policy
As we kick off the new school year, San Diego Unified is introducing a new learner-centered technology resolution to help students stay focused, healthy, and engaged in learning.
Beginning August 10, students will see a few important changes:
Video-streaming platforms, such as YouTube, will only be available on district-issued Chromebooks when enabled by teachers for instructional purposes.
Non-instructional gaming platforms will still be prohibited on district-issued devices.
Computer carts will be removed from Transitional Kindergarten (TK) classrooms, while ensuring students with Individualized Education Plans, 504 Plans, or language-learning needs continue to receive appropriate access.
These updates are part of our commitment to creating learning environments where technology supports student learning, safety, wellness, and healthy development.
As a parent, you can also reduce screentime and non-instructional use of Chromebooks by activating your Blocksi Parent account to monitor and restrict access when your student is not at school. To learn more about how to use Blocksi, read this Blocksi Parent Job Aid.
