Mary Hogan Family Newsletter

Update from Principal Jen Kravitz
September 15, 2023
Dear Mary Hogan Families,
What a beautiful week we had to welcome you all into school last night for Back to School Night. I was so great to see you all in school last night, following your children around as they showed you their teachers, looked for friends, and played out on Hawk Zone. Thank you to everyone who shared which learner profile attribute they are hoping to work on this year. I am working to gather this from our community so that we call can help each other work on that attribute, notice what we are working on as a school, and grow together. Thank you all for being such an amazing school community
Be well,
Jen
PS - A note from one of our neighbors... Tim's Garage is requesting that families do not park there to drop off or pick up children. It is a business and need their parking spots. Thanks for understanding!

Puddle Jumping
Preschool goes out rain or shine on their adventure days. This week, they had a great chance to do some serious puddle jumping from the rain in their fantastic rain suits!T
Team Work in PE
Students inS PE classes have been doing a number of different team building activities. In these, students not only have to work together as a team, but do so in the context of being competitive, good sportsmanship, and communicators.
Sparkle and Shiny Dress Day
Thursday was our first Spirit Day. We will be having one each month, with the theme chosen by different grades. The fifth grade chose this month's Sparkle and Shiny Day. It was a blast to see all the students and staff sparkling in the halls and classrooms.
Back to School Night
We welcomed many, many families into school on Thursday night for our Back to School Night. The playground was packed after students led their families around to all the important places to them in school. Some students did a scavenger hunt around school. I hope you had a great time exploring not only your child's room but also their arts, Spanish, and movement classes, the library, and seeing your child's friends.
Third Grade Math Practice
Students are getting back into the groove. As teachers are deepening their understanding of their students, they are designing learning to help meet students where they are and practice new skills. In third grade this week, students were practicing their math knowledge and strategies with games and collaborative work.

Family Resources & Opportunities
Green Mountain Book Festival - 9/29-10/1
The Green Mountain Book Festival will take place in Burlington from September 29 through October 1.
On Saturday from 11-12, kids will have an opportunity to participate in our kids' parade on Church Street. (It is very likely that Champ will be joining us, too!) For the parade kids can dress up as a favorite book character, bring noise makers and colorful streamers, or wear colorful hats.
Sunday programming (10:30-3:45) is designed for kids and families with a great lineup of authors such as Jason Chin, Kate Messner, Joseph Bruchac, Kyle Lukoff.
Student Illness and COVID
We expect students and staff to stay home with any potentially contagious illnesses or symptoms including the following:
Vomiting/diarrhea-must be 24 hours symptom free before returning to school
Fever 100.4 or greater-home until fever free without use of medication for 24 hours
Any infection requiring antibiotic-keep your student home until they have been on antibiotics for 24 hours
Persistent cough that disrupts normal activity
Unexplained rash
Influenza-stay home until fever free without medication for 24 hours
Any other symptoms or illness that impedes a student’s ability to learn or staff’s ability to work.
You may return once feeling well enough to be at school and fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications.
Click here to view our COVID and Contagious illness guidance infographic. We are currently waiting to hear if we will continue to have access to COVID tests to send home with families and staff as needed. At this time, the school nurse will no longer be able to test students or staff for COVID at school though this is subject to change.
