A Message from Ms. Osmerg
Happy New Year Jaguar Families!
We hope you enjoyed your holiday break! We are excited to kick-off the second semester. Last week was a #AHE-mazing first week back, even ending with a Remote Learning Day. We want to thank our Korean families for hosting a Welcome Back breakfast for our teachers last week. It was certainly appreciated and a sweet treat to start our week!
I would like to thank our PTA who works to provide so many different events throughout the school year. The PTA recently awarded PTA mini-grants to staff members to fund various items that directly impact your children. A schoolwide subscription to Generation Genius for all teachers to use to enhance students' learning experiences and a few classroom carpets for students to gather are examples of some of the grants that were funded.
The Abbotts Hill PTA is hosting a Meet and Greet this Friday, January 17th, giving families the opportunity to meet Ms. Osmerg and Ms. Musto. Please see the attached flyer for more information.
Thursday, January 23rd, is the first Abbotts Hill Strategy Night! It will be from 5:30-7:00 PM, and we hope you can join us. The class with the highest parent/guardian participation will receive a popcorn party! Please see the attached flyer for more information.
Finally, please help us out by labeling all of your students' jackets and/or coats. Our lost and found already has items in it, and it is easier for students to identify their lost belongings if they are labeled.
Stay warm!
Jill Osmerg
Write Score (Grades 3-5)
All students in grades 3-5 will be participating in the Write Score Assessment January 27-29. This is an online writing assessment that measures skills in writing standards as aligned to the state standards and part 1 (writing) section of the ELA Georgia Milestones. This assessment will provide teachers with targeted data of students' writing proficiencies as another method of guiding instructional decisions and support.
Young Georgia Authors Writing Competition
This year Abbotts Hill students will have the opportunity to participate in the annual Young Georgia Author’s Writing Competition sponsored by the Georgia Department of Education. The purpose of this competition is to encourage our students to develop enthusiasm for and expertise in their writing. Your child will submit an original piece of writing that they have created on their own, by January 31 to Ms. Henn. There will be one winner from each grade. Each winner will have their writing judged at the district level. See the attachment below to learn more about the competition. I hope you encourage your child to participate in this amazing opportunity and showcase their writing talents.
ACCESS Testing - ESOL Students
Each year, students in English learner programs take the ACCESS for ELLs language proficiency test. The test measures academic English language proficiency for students learning English in our school and throughout our state.
What is the purpose of ACCESS for ELLs?
ACCESS for ELLs is a standards-based, criterion-referenced English language proficiency test designed to measure English learners’ social and academic proficiency in English. It assesses social and instructional English as well as the language associated with language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies within the school context across the four language domains.
Who takes ACCESS for ELLs?
ACCESS for ELLs is administered annually to all English learners in Georgia.
When is ACCESS for ELLs given?
The district testing window is January 13 – February 25. Abbotts Hill will start testing January 20th.
