HMS Friday Flyover
10/2/26
From the Principal
Hello Hawks!
This was one of those weeks where there was a lot going on, but in the best way. The building had a great energy all week, and it was fun to see students involved in so many different things.
Our girls volleyball teams took on Marlowe at the high school, which made for a great atmosphere and a fun night for everyone who came out to support. Itโs always exciting when our students get the chance to compete in that kind of setting and represent Heineman. We also had Picture Day, so there was a little extra excitement throughout the building.
And of course, we wrapped up the week with the Color Run, which is always one of those events students really look forward to. It was great to see everyone outside, having fun, and enjoying one of the events that makes this time of year feel special.
October is already off to a busy start, and there is plenty more ahead. Looking forward to another great week at Heineman!
Go All IN Today!

Welcome to our new Home/School Connection corner! Middle school is a time of huge growth, and we are here to partner with you every step of the way. These tips will range from simple ways to help with homework and build strong study habits, to strategies for supporting your child's emotional well-being and confidence.
Announcements & Reminders ๐ฃ
MAKE UP DAY ๐ธ๐ Smile! Itโs Picture Day!
Picture retakes will be held on Thursday, October 22nd.
๐ง Reminder: Students Should Check Their School Email
Parents, please remind your students to check their school email throughout the school day. Important messages may include notifications about early dismissals for appointments, items dropped off in the office, changes to car rider or bus rider arrangements, and other time-sensitive information.
Students are responsible for checking their email, reading these messages, and reporting to the appropriate location at the designated time. We use email rather than classroom phone calls whenever possible to minimize disruptions to instruction and allow teachers to focus on teaching. Thank you for helping us reinforce this important responsibility with your students!
๐ Activity Bus Information
Students must sign up for the activity bus by 12:00 PM each day using the online form. Students are responsible for completing the sign-up form themselves. If needed, students may sign up for an entire week at a time.
We appreciate parentsโ help in encouraging students to take responsibility for signing up on time and planning ahead!
UPDATED PICTURE: ๐ LOST & FOUND! ๐งฅ
Missing a hoodie, water bottle, lunchbox, or favorite sweatshirt? Be sure to check our Lost & Found! There may be something waiting to make its way back home. Students are encouraged to check the Lost & Found regularly and claim their belongings before theyโre gone!
4th Annual Recycle for Sight
Huntley School District 158 is excited to once again partner with the Huntley Area Lions Club for the 4th Annual Recycle for Sight Used Eyeglass Collection Drive, taking place at all District 158
schools during the week of October 19-23. How can you help? Take a few minutes to look
through your dresser drawers, closets, and other places where old eyeglasses may be collecting dust.
Weโre collecting:
- Prescription eyeglasses
- Prescription sunglasses
- Reading eyeglasses
- Empty plastic and metal eyeglass frames
Donโt wear them anymore? Donate them and give them a second chance to help
someone else see clearly! And donโt forget to ask your friends, neighbors, and family
members to join in!
Donation boxes will be available at all District 158 schools and the Administration Office
from Monday, October 19, through Friday, October 23.
Letโs come together as a community and surpass our record of 282 pairs of eyeglasses
collected!
Every pair makes a difference!
Make Your Voice Count! Join Heineman Parent Advisory Committee
Heineman is looking for parents/guardians who want to play an active role in strengthening the school experience for students and families!
Members will meet with school administration three times during the 2026-27 school year to share perspectives and ideas, provide feedback on important topics, and work collaboratively with school leaders to identify ways to increase family engagement and enhance the educational experience for all students. Members will also serve as parent ambassadors, helping strengthen communication and understanding between the school and its families.
To ensure all voices are heard and that everyone has an opportunity to participate and contribute, the Parent Advisory Committee will be limited to 25-30 members who will represent different grade levels and a broad range of perspectives. To support continuity and meaningful participation, committee members are asked to attend all three meetings during the 2026-27 school year.
Meeting dates for HMS
Tuesday, October 20, 2026 (6pm-7:30pm)
Tuesday, January 26, 2027 (6pm-7:30pm)
Wednesday, April 7, 2027 (6pm-7:30pm)
Interested in getting involved? Complete this brief form by October 2nd.
Satchel Pulse
It is the mission of Huntley Community School District 158 to inspire, challenge and empower all of our students. In order to accomplish this, teachers and staff regularly monitor student progress. Huntley 158 uses Satchel Pulse, a tool that measures our K-12 studentsโ learning in relation to the Illinois Social and Emotional Learning Standards and CASEL competencies. Just as Aimsweb and STAR are screeners for math and literacy, Satchel Pulse serves as a screening tool that monitors a student's growth in developing skills such as self-management, goal-setting, collaboration, and decision-making.

Attendance Medical Notes
Please remember to send in a medical note for your child if they have missed school for an appointment. This helps us accurately track each student's attendance properly and avoids unexcused absences. You may also email your note to our Attendance Secretary, Mrs. Lisa Meyers at limeyers@district158.org.
If you child will be out due to a vacation, please have them pick up a vacation absence form in the school office. This will help our office properly track attendance . These absences are considered unexcused per District 158 that follows the State of Illinois policies.
Please notify the office...
If your student(s) will be out of school please be sure to contact the attendance line at 847-659-4311.
This helps us accurately track your student's attendance . Thank you.
๐Staff Spotlight ๐
While Laura Komos is a new face at Heineman this year, she is a veteran educator in District 158. Miss Komos began her teaching career in Huntley in the 1900s (1995 to be exact). She vividly remembers the days when D158 only had two school buildings - the high school (which is now the Huntley Park District building at Deicke Park) and the elementary/middle school building (across from the Park District building, which is now a vacant lot used for overflow parking). She has served in a variety of roles across the district including teaching first grade, fourth grade, and fifth grade, as well as bilingual interventionist (English/Spanish) for Kindergarten-6th grade. This year, she is helping to support multilingual learners alongside Mrs. Ratkowski and Mrs. Hollabaugh at HMS.
Outside of teaching, you will often find Miss Komos taking road trips with her mom, watching her niece play volleyball for Woodstock High School, and rooting for the Chicago Cubs.
