Oakland Schools is hosting the second annual Student Seal of Biliteracy Boot Camp!

Over 50 Spanish students participated in Oakland School's first Seal of Biliteracy Boot Camp in March 2019. Boot Camp offers students an opportunity to participate in a “linguistic obstacle course” that includes real-world tasks to evaluate their language proficiency in listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Students get real time feedback on their language performance, have the opportunity to connect with other language learners, and build their confidence to test for the Seal of Biliteracy. Lake Orion High School’s CTE program empowers students to become globally competitive in today’s fast-paced and ever-changing marketplace in a rigorous and experiential learning environment. Students enrolled in these courses are offered post-secondary articulated credits, as well as industry certifications. Students are provided opportunities to refine their academic and technical skills through training and project-based learning necessary to succeed in their area of study.

We strive to prepare our students to be college and career ready upon graduation through partnerships with local business and industry advisors and mentors, curriculum that aligns with post-secondary and today’s industry standards. In addition, students are offered leadership opportunities through student organizations such as DECA, BPA, Future Educators and FIRST Robotics. Our CTE students gain the skills and knowledge in their career pathways to not only be successful, but to become lifelong learners.

Attendance Blurb #10

School Attendance, Truancy & Chronic Absenteeism: What Parents Need to Know

How many days has your child been absent from school over the past 4 weeks? Was it just one sick day or two? What about the day they left early for the dentist? Or the days you took off to extend a vacation? It's hard to always keep track.

Missing a day here or there may not seem like a problem. But absences add up quickly. And these missed school days can have a big impact on your child's learning and overall health.

Missing two days a month—excused or unexcused—can add up to a child being considered chronically absent.

That's why the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) encourages parents to reduce unnecessary absences, learn about attendance policies where they live and prioritize getting their kids to school on time, every day (see 10 tips, below).

School Dismissal Manager

We have started utilizing School Dismissal Manager (SDM), a program for parents to communicate early student departures. LOHS successfully used the SDM program last year. It is accessible on either computer or smartphone, allowing parents the opportunity to officially submit an early dismissal request without calling the school.

On approximately September 22, you should have received a communication from School Dismissal Manager with additional details. Parents are encouraged to check their designated email accounts. Also, be advised the message might be redirected to your “junk” folders. The welcome email from SDM provides all relevant information necessary to activate and begin using your account.

The Lake Orion Band Boosters will be partnering with Funds2org and hosting a used shoe donation drive that kicks-off in mid-January. This fundraiser helps offset this unnecessary waste and help keep shoes out of landfills. The gently used shoes that we collect will be consolidated and shipped by Funds2org to developing countries such as Haiti, Cambodia, and Botswana where they will be sold to small business owners for a very low price. In turn, the shoes will be sold by these small business owners to communities in need of proper footwear, at an inexpensive price. This helps create a path out of poverty for these small business owners in countries where there are limited, if any, job opportunities that pay a living wage.
