PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

While not quite the homestretch, we are entering that time of year when you may get inundated with information. Please make sure to check your email and your student’s folder for information from the school and district. As a reminder, an approved volunteer application needs to be on file for each school year. In order to be considered for volunteering/chaperoning, the form needs to be completed at least one week for processing. https://www.rsu1.org/page/volunteer-information

Brown Tail Moth information

Recommendations to reduce exposure:

• Avoid places heavily infested by caterpillars.

• Take cool showers and change clothes after any activity that may expose you to browntail moth hairs.

• Dry laundry inside during June and July to avoid having the hairs embedded in clothing.

• Wear appropriate safety equipment which may include a respirator, goggles, and coveralls tightly closed at the neck, wrists, and ankles when performing activities that stir up caterpillar hairs such as mowing, raking, weed whacking, and removing pupal webbing. Perform these tasks on damp days or spray down vegetation with a hose. The moisture helps keep the hairs from becoming airborne while working.

Treatment for rash:

There is no specific treatment for dermatitis due to browntail moths; treatment is focused on relieving symptoms and eliminating ongoing exposure.

• Mild rashes may be treated with calamine or caladryl lotion, hydrocortisone cream, or taking a cool bath with Aveeno Oatmeal. or baking soda. Severe reactions may require prescription medication.

• The toxin in the hairs is extremely stable and can remain a hazard for years.

Could Your Child Benefit from Mentoring?

When it comes to our children's future, we’re in this together. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bath/Brunswick pairs screened positive mentors with youth to create a community where all children achieve success.

We offer school-based mentoring, in which your child is matched with a trained adult volunteer who meets with them weekly at their school for lunch and recess.

We also offer community-based mentoring, in which your child and their Big meet to do fun things together on a schedule that works for them.

All our programs are free!
