Celebrating Black History Month:

Title: Together

By: Mr. D. Bonnell- IHS Art Teacher

All of us find us situated within a paradigm that has never existed before. Our lives have been arrested by a virus. It affects everything. Staying encouraged and focused on the future can be a very hard thing. Words and sermons express the moment, but they always fall short. This is where we need art to help us out.

Art picks us up where words fail. Art can embrace you visually verses

just chatting about being held. At Islands High School our theme is

to work as a staff to swarm together as sharks do within a school.

The swarming causes a vortex of flow and energy allowing the school

to work as one unit. Therefore, as the art instructor at IHS I am attempting

to produce art that takes us beyond the words of encouraging lectures

and speeches. I am attempting to create art that embraces and enables

staff and students to focus that we are all in this moment, together, like

a swarm.

I choose to improve the entrance to the school so that as soon as one

enters they are encouraged with art that visually establishes our task,

that we work together as students and staff. As one enters into the

main intersection of the atrium three large paintings on wood panels

will greet you with three quotes related to CARE-ing. They will be completed

within days and mounted to the walls with more art yet to come

throughout the building in the coming months.

With parents, students and teachers working TOGETHER we will all

come through this trial and we will all be stronger because of it.

Perhaps the post virus era will show us just how important it is

then to work--TOGETHER.
