CALIFORNIA HEALTHY KIDS SURVEY COMING SOON
Your child is being asked to be a part of our school’s California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) sponsored by the California Department of Education (CDE). This is a very important survey that will help promote better health and well-being among our youth, improve the school learning environment and combat problems such as drug abuse and violence. Your child does not have to take the survey. If you do not want your child to complete the survey, you must notify your school.
Survey Content. The survey gathers information on developmental supports provided to youth; school connectedness and barriers to learning; school safety; health-related concerns such as physical activity and nutritional habits; alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use; risk of depression and suicide; and protected class identifiers such as sexual orientation and gender identity.
You may examine the questionnaire at your district’s website: https://www.smusd.org/families
The results from this survey are compiled into district- and county-level CHKS Reports. To view a copy of your district’s report, go to https://calschls.org/reports-data/search-lea-reports/ (Outside Source) and type in the district name.
It is Voluntary. Students who, with your permission, agree to participate do not have to answer any questions they do not want to answer, and may stop taking the survey at any time.
It is Anonymous. No names are recorded or attached to the survey forms or data. The results will be made available for analysis only under strict confidentiality controls.
Administration. The survey will be administered between February 20 through March 1 in your child's English class.
Our site contact is Jillian Ryan, Assistant Principal. (jillian.ryan@smusd.org)

SOCIAL MEDIA AWARENESS TIPS FOR PARENTS
Families, please review your child's social media accounts regularly. Monitor their DMs and note that many students have more than one account on a platform. Snapchat, instagram, and discord are the most commonly-used platforms for communication, and unfortunately we are seeing an increase in bullying behaviors. These behaviors do not align with our core values, and we take these situations very seriously.
As administration becomes aware of the students behind the account, we pursue severe consequences for those responsible. Students who engage in such behavior will be subject to educational/restorative and/or disciplinary actions including, but not limited to, attendance to an intervention program, restorative conference, referral to counseling services, denial of participation in extracurricular or co-curricular activities or other school privileges and progressive discipline measures (i.e. detention, saturday school, suspension) depending on the severity or history of this behavior. “Students also may be subject to discipline, in accordance with law, Board policy, or administrative regulation, for any off-campus conduct during nonschool hours which poses a threat or danger to the safety of students, staff, or district property, or substantially disrupts school activities." We are working collaboratively with our district office and law enforcement to mitigate these situations. We will also be delivering Digital Citizenship lessons to directly inform students.
We encourage parents and students to continue to "report" or flag these accounts to the platform administrators; if you have any information on individuals who may be running an inappropriate account, please reach out to our administration team as soon as possible.
If you do find that your child is impacted by activity on social media, please reach out to your student's Assistant Principal and counselor for on-campus support.
