This year, the students at Sloatsburg Elementary School were introduced to an exciting new learning environment called the Math Lab. This engaging space allows students to explore math routines and strategies that enhance their numeracy skills. The special math talks and activities are all curriculum-based, featuring games designed to promote critical thinking, fluency, and, most importantly, mathematical fun.

Many of the games, fluency goals, and activities from the Math Lab are available on the Sloatsburg Family Math Menu, which is posted in Peach Jar. Be sure to look for game rules and materials to help continue the fun at home for your growing mathematician. For questions or more information please reach out to our Math Specialist, Mrs. Brennan at lbrennan@sufferncentral.org.

This Week in SEL: Mindfulness, Movement, and sELF-Control! This Week in SEL: Mindfulness, Movement, and sELF-Control!

During this week’s Social Emotional Learning lessons, Mrs. Stephenson, our school counselor, led students as they practiced mindfulness and self-control while also tying in the excitement of the holiday season!

"In first grade, students focused on the idea of sELF Control (with a fun holiday twist!). Students discussed what it means to stop, think, and make thoughtful choices, even when emotions or excitement might make that difficult. We shared examples of times when we did not use self-control and talked about what we could have done differently using calming strategies such as breathing, positive thinking, drawing, reading, or taking space.

To end our lesson, students followed along with “Holiday Dance and Freeze” by Jack Hartmann, which gave them a chance to practice controlling their bodies and impulses.... while having a blast!

In second grade, students participated in a guided “Mindful Melt” meditation, beginning with a quiet mindfulness activity where they listened carefully and practiced letting go of distracting thoughts. We discussed how being mindful means being fully present in the moment... even when our minds drift to something that happened earlier, what might happen later, or what is happening around us. Student's even said "I completely forgot I wanted to have my snack!"

Afterward, students participated in a GoNoodle “melting” guided meditation activity, where they stiffened their bodies and then slowly melted down to the floor. They reflected afterward using words such as “calm,” “relaxed,” “different,” “weird,” and “happy” to describe how their bodies felt.

Both lessons reinforced important calming strategies and encouraged students to build “tools in their toolbox” that help them regulate emotions, stay present, and make thoughtful choices. And of course, we made sure learning included movement, joy, and holiday fun!

We are so proud of the mindful work our students are doing and look forward to continuing to practice these valuable skills throughout the year."
