Happy 2026!

Dear Parents and Families,

Welcome back and Happy New Year! I hope you all had a restful and joyful winter break. I love that our hallways are filled with the energy and smiles of our Mustangs. As we start into second half of the school year, we are focused on maintaining our momentum to ensure that every child learns at high levels.

As we return to our routines, I want to emphasize the critical role that consistent, on-time attendance plays in your child’s success.

When a student arrives late or misses a day, they miss out on more than just a lesson; they miss the social connections and the "set-up" for future learning. Being in the classroom every day and on time helps students feel prepared, reduces anxiety, and ensures they don’t have to "catch up" while new concepts are being introduced. Please work with us to make daily attendance a top priority.

The start of a new semester is the perfect time for a "refresh" on our behavioral expectations. This week, teachers have taken the time to review our core values and classroom procedures with all students. Our goal is to foster a safe, respectful, and focused environment where everyone can learn. You can support this at home by asking your child, “What are the PRIDE expectations?” They should be able to tell you:

P – problem solver

R – respect

I – integrity

D – Determined

E – Effort

In addition to having these memorized, they should be able to explain what it means to be a problem solver, to show respect, to have integrity, to be determined, and to demonstrate effort. At different times this week, students have reviewed these expectations on the McClure Breakfast News, in small groups, as a class, and out on the playground. By aligning our language at home and at school, we provide the consistent structure children need to be successful.

This month, we are placing a special academic emphasis on math fluency. Math fluency is the ability to recall basic facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division) quickly and accurately. Much like reading fluency, math fluency allows the brain to "save room" for more complex problem-solving later on.

How you can help at home:

  • Practice math facts for just 5–10 minutes a day using flashcards or digital apps.
  • Have your child help with measurements while cooking or calculate the total "sale price" while grocery shopping.
  • Use dice or a deck of cards to play "Math War," where the person who adds or multiplies the numbers fastest wins the round. You can practice subtraction by having your student subtract the smallest number from the largest number as well.

Thank you for your continued partnership and for all you do to support our school community. Our Mustang Staff is anticipating a fantastic January!

Have an amazing day!

Ms. Bourgeois

ATTENDANCE MATTERS!!!

Many of our McClure students are beginning to show signs of chronic absenteeism and we are seeing effects on their learning and behaviors at school. Please help us reach our goal of improving student attendance.

DID YOU KNOW?
● Students who attend every day meet state criteria for kindergarten readiness; early reading, math abilities, and social-emotional skills.
● Absences may indicate underlying issues like disengagement, academic struggles, or bullying.
● Missing 10% of school days may negatively affect reading and math proficiency.
● Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two days every few weeks.
● By 6th grade, absenteeism is one of three signs that a student may drop out of high school.
● Students are more likely to pass classes and graduate from high school when they miss less than a week of school
each semester.

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU
We miss your students when they're not in school and value their contributions. We would like to help ensure that your student attends regularly and succeeds. If your student is going to be absent, please contact your school’s attendance
secretary.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

● Set a Routine: Establish a regular bedtime and morning schedule.
● Prepare Ahead: Finish homework and get ready for school the night before.
● Consider Health: Consider signs and symptoms when deciding to excuse your student for being ill.
● Limit Absences: Avoid appointments and trips during school hours.
● Have Backup Plans: Arrange alternatives for getting to school if needed.
● Monitor Attendance: Keep track of your student’s attendance and discuss its importance.
● Communicate with Teachers: Talk to teachers if you notice sudden changes in behavior.

Lee Paggett Food Drive

McClure is proud to once again partner with Northwest Harvest for the annual Lee Paggett Food Drive, happening Tuesday, January 6 through Thursday, January 15.

For more than 20 years, YSD schools have collected food donations in honor of Lee Paggett, a beloved district employee who dedicated himself to supporting students, families, and our community. This tradition continues his legacy of generosity and service.

All donated food will support local families through Northwest Harvest, and participating schools will work together in a friendly competition to collect the greatest total weight of donations. The school with the highest total will be recognized with an engraved plaque.

Most-needed items include:

🥫 Canned meat proteins

🥛 Shelf-stable milk

🥕 Canned vegetables

🍑 Canned fruit

🫙 Cooking oil

🫘 Beans

🌾 Masa

🍚 Rice

Thank you to our students, families, and staff for helping us continue this meaningful tradition and make a difference for our community.
