We discussed many aspects within these bonds:

  • Tax neutral as RIDE contributes greatly and other bonds are paid off (great timing)
  • Will address years of capital improvements that have been deferred
  • Aspects SEAC parents have requested (over the years) include: much mobility/access improvements like to doorways, playgrounds, bathrooms, fencing around the elementary schools for safety, and more!!

Presentation by Alexis Meyer, Director of Teaching and Learning: New Curriculum and it will apply to students with learning challenges

New ELA Curriculum Work (this was presented to the School Committee previously July 16th)

  • Had to present to the school committee to request the funds
  • Cost is not just the curriculum, but also for the lab resources
  • We were committed to doing it all
  • The ELA Task Force members
  • When you think about high performing schools in high performing countries, these are the pieces that need to be there
  • The road traveled
  • Joined RIDE Curriculum work for ELA (doing it now for Math)
  • EdReports and current reality including the data of where we are now
  • Increasing complexity of curriculum and how is that now developed?
  • In Jan 2019, we did a deeper dive; thought about non-negotiable
  • Differentiated materials
  • Did curriculum comparisons
  • RIDE signed legislation that request all school districts to have curriculum
  • RIDE also charged with coming up with a series of vetted, recommended curriculum (equivalent of materials); huge shift in this work towards that (evaluated against certain standards)
  • Next steps were to think about professional development considerations and collaboration (May and June)
  • Key shifts in ELA standards
  • Shifts in 6-12
  • Vision
  • ELA guiding principles
  • Adopted EL Reading Curriculum
  • What does the curriculum look like (we stuck with the modules and the labs); in those lab materials, the children are actually experiencing the curriculum
  • This year used the modules, but still using Fundations - haven't used the skills labs yet
  • Over a two year period, there was some work done with pairing it with high quality professional development (1.4 months of growth in a year)
  • Edreports - you can go on their website and see any of the vetted materials that are in there
  • The learning targets - the ways kids are learning (think-pair-shares)
  • 2-3 Hours of ELA curriculum a day
  • Handout
  • Implementation Plan - for next year, use it in K-2
  • Heard from a staff member regarding the process and resources
  • LH talked about the meaningful collaboration of all educators and conversations around access
  • Online allows access to all grade levels

Professional Learning Plan

On website under staff resources (link)

  • Explaining what constitutes a PLU (professional learning unit- new RIDE req)
  • The new system is more strategic - there are criteria now around what qualifies as a PLU
  • In order for a teacher to get PLUs, it has to be around improve their practice - develop pedagogical knowledge, etc.
  • We committed to the teachers that our job is to support all of their work; that systemic approach is critical and new; also honoring each individual's interests and what they bring to the table
  • Frontline is the system that manages all of this
  • We also put up trainings we provide in district and conferences
  • Upcoming budget process, the budget is bare bones - it focuses a lot on curriculum implementation (in MS working on Amplify science curriculum and the ELA too, Envisions 2.0 to Envisions 20/20, career investigation kits - all require money and learning
