Hobbies/free time interests: I love to knit, hike, bicycle, and play volleyball. My favorite place to backpack is Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior. I am a proud election worker with the Town of Springdale.
What attracted you to apply in #PointerNation?: I am excited to join the close-knit community in Mineral Point and help all students excel. I can’t wait to work with all the Elementary teachers to create a cohesive experience for our ESL students. The teachers and staff I have met already are both welcoming and knowledgeable. The beautiful setting in the driftless region just a bit south on 151 from my home in Springdale is a bonus!
Quotable: “Helping students excel in a new environment and learn a new language, as well as leveraging their home language, is something I am passionate about. I believe all students are capable of meeting high educational standards and my role as an educator is to encourage students to reach for those high standards. I will lead my classroom with compassion and community. I believe education should be as student-centered as possible. I will create a classroom environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and trying again. I believe student voice is important to keep the classroom a vibrant and welcoming space that values all people and cultures."
WELCOME, ANDREA COOL
Let's give a big #PointerNation welcome to Andrea Cool, new High School English Teacher!
Hometown: Amherst Junction
High school graduated from: Amherst High School
College: Andrea earned her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature with a Philosophy minor from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, her Master of Arts in English Literature from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and her Doctorate of Education in Higher Education Leadership from Edgewood College.

Family: 4 kids: TJ, Jazmine, Julianna, and Marcus. Husband - Terry.
Hobbies/free time interests: Gardening, barbershop quartet singing.
What attracted you to apply in #PointerNation?: I love the fact that students are successful and ambitious, want to go places and accomplish all sorts of things. It's exciting to help them develop skills for realizing their dreams and being community-minded citizens.
Quotable: “Learning humanities related material helps students understand the world they are living in, and the worlds they will be living in; it helps them understand themselves--not only who they are but also, who they want to be. Studying literature and engaging in creative writing helps some students find necessary outlets for expressing themselves. Language Arts provides an arena for language and communication-based creativity to flourish. This is vitally important for young people searching for a pathway for the rest of their lives. But even more important, what they read impacts who they are, how they understand themselves, and how they understand others.”
WELCOME, RIANNA DOWDS
Let's give a big #PointerNation welcome to Rianna Dowds, new Speech and Language Pathologist!
Hometown: Merrill
High school graduated from: Merrill High School

Previous employment: She completed a clinical experience at Hartland Lakeside Elementary School this past spring.
Family: Rianna lives outside of Madison with her boyfriend and their cat, Chio!
Hobbies/free time interests: I enjoy hiking, swimming, and being outside. When the weather doesn't cooperate, I enjoy drinking tea with a good book.
What attracted you to apply in #PointerNation?: The sense of community in Mineral Point was a huge draw for me!
Quotable: “My philosophy prioritizes the connections and relationships that grow when a student is approached with understanding, patience, and allowed to partake in their care through a flexible environment. Through the Assistive Technology and Design Program at UW-Milwaukee, I have gained skills in interprofessional collaboration by working with occupational and physical therapists to solve complex accessibility issues. This experience furthered my passion, which drives me to make the world accessible and adaptable to those who think, move, and communicate differently. I look forward to further developing this skill, working to be inclusive by implementing interventions that support students and their families.”

What attracted you to apply in #PointerNation?: What attracted me to apply in #PointerNation is the long-standing reputation of Mineral Point as a successful district. Growing up, Mineral Point was always a local rival, but over the years, I’ve come to admire how the district has consistently been a leader in education. Today, it’s a district that many educators aspire to work in. Honestly, I never thought I’d switch out my red for Pointer blue, but the opportunity to contribute to such a strong, community-oriented district is something I wanted to be a part of.
Quotable: “I believe every student has the potential to succeed with the right support and connections. Moving into school psychology feels like a natural next step for me in helping students with their academic, social-emotional, and behavioral needs from a holistic perspective. My background has prepared me to take on the varied responsibilities of a school psychologist. I've worked with students facing a range of challenges, from learning disabilities to emotional and behavioral struggles, and I’m experienced in creating individualized interventions, working with families and teams, and supporting mental health and regulation needs. I also bring a strong foundation in behavior management, trauma-informed care, and using data to make decisions, all of which will help me contribute meaningfully to the pupil services team at Mineral Point. I’m really drawn to Mineral Point’s commitment to excellence and the strong ties they have with the community.”
WELCOME, HAYDEN HARDYMAN
Let's give a big #PointerNation welcome to Hayden Hardyman, new Middle School Science Teacher!
Hometown: Darlington
High school graduated from: Darlington High School
College: Hayden earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, majoring in Elementary Education 1st-8th Grade, with a minor in Science, emphasis in Biology.
Previous employment: Most recently, Hayden has been a Middle School Science Teacher in Dodgeville.
Family: Happily married to my wife Katie since July of 2022 and we have two children; Rosie (1 year old) and Rip (3 weeks old)!
Hobbies/free time interests: I love to watch all types of sports and cheer for the Badgers, Brewers, Bucks, and Packers! I also enjoy collecting sports memorabilia. When not watching my favorite teams, I enjoy being outdoors and spending quality time with my family.
What attracted you to apply in #PointerNation?: Mineral Point has continuously succeeded in all aspects in academics and extracurricular activities. Serving as a coach, official, and educator within the area has provided me with many interactions with this school district. Seeing this success and support from the community made me and my family want to plant our roots within this wonderful, historic town and district. I am extremely grateful and excited to be a part of #PointerNation!
Quotable: "Being an educator has given me the opportunity to instill a passion for kindness, empathy, respect, and a love of learning in the next generation. Inspiring students and guiding them as they learn essential skills for success in life are core values that drive my teaching. In my classroom, each student is valued and respected. I prioritize building strong, supportive relationships by fostering meaningful connections with my students. By modeling my core values, I establish a classroom community that expresses compassion, encourages collaboration, and views mistakes as opportunities for growth."
WELCOME (HOME), JASON PALZKILL
Let's give a big #PointerNation welcome (home) to Jason Palzkill, new High School Social Studies Teacher!
Hometown: Mineral Point
High school graduated from: Mineral Point High School
College: Jason received his Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, his Bachelor of Arts in Education from Edgewood College, and his Certification in General Science from Winona State University.
Previous employment: Most recently, Jason has been a Social Studies Teacher at Dodgeville High School. Previously, he has also served as a History Teacher at Indian Mound Middle School in McFarland, Middle School Science and Social Studies Teacher at St. Maria Goretti in Madison, and Middle School Social Studies Teacher at Kasson-Mantorville School District in Minnesota.
Family: Jason is supported by a wonderful family. His wife, Jenna, is a nurse anesthetist at Southwest Health and her education and career are the reason he had opportunity to teach in so many wonderful districts. He is very happy to be finally settled in his hometown. His son Cullen is going into 8th Grade, and daughter Jayne, is going into 6th Grade. And he can’t forget the boss of the household: Golden Retriever Bella.
Hobbies/free time interests: Jason loves sports (Go Pack Go!), the outdoors, going to concerts, and traveling. This past year his family was able to visit many national parks, with the Grand Tetons being his favorite!
What attracted you to apply in #PointerNation?: This opening represents an opportunity to teach my favorite subject matter, in the same district as my children and my alma mater. My high school years featured opportunities and challenges, and the guidance I received from top-notch educators in MP, and countless others, has lasted a lifetime. I treasure the opportunity to give back to a community that has given so much to me.
Quotable: “My educational philosophy centers around helping learners become the best they can be and to help foster a positive and trusting classroom. Students are faced with many challenges each day, and I believe teachers are instrumental in helping them develop the tools needed to navigate an ever-changing world. I believe my strength is in relationship building with students and staff, and bringing positive energy to the teaching and learning process each day.”
One of my favorite quotes:
“People are people. Always have been, and always will be” - Bruce Fischer, retired Social Studies Teacher- McFarland High School
