Issue #11: October 17, 2025
Principal Corner
Good afternoon, Chapelfield families.
We had our first PAWS Breakfast this week to celebrate students who have shown positive behavior during Quarter 1—way to go, Lions!
Please join us in congratulating Mrs. Beth Pardi, our 5th grade math teacher, who was recognized as GJPS' Heart and Pride Award winner! She accepted her award at last night’s board meeting—what an amazing honor!
Our Read-A-Thon is in full swing, and we need your help to reach our goal. We’re currently $11,464 short of our $19,500 goal. This is our biggest PTO fundraiser of the year, supporting wonderful programs like Breakfast for Buddies, Family Night, the School Carnival, Teacher Grants, Classroom Books, Kindergarten Celebrations, and Guys with Ties, just to name a few.
If every family raised just $50, we would meet our goal!
Please consider donating here: https://app.99pledges.com/fund/chapelfield25?home_v2=true. Continue to follow along with our One School, One Book. Our website, linked below, will keep you updated on all events. Next week, we have spirit week!
Thank you for supporting our students and school community! Reminder that there is no school on Monday.
Sincerely,
Nikki Miller

Art with Mrs. Karr
Lots of clay and paint in the art room this month!
Kindergarten and 1st grade began their clay units. In Kindergarten, we started by learning about where clay comes from and how to form a block of clay into a ball and make a pinch pot. 1st grade learned “score, wet, stick, blend” to attach two pieces of clay then applied the process to make Pinch Pot Pets (pinch pots with ears, feet, wings and tails!). We finish wet clay this week and projects will dry for one week before they are fired and glazed.
Second graders finished marker painting and learned how to draw a realistic pumpkin as a sphere and a sunflower using imperfect shapes and lines. We talked about how bumpy and wiggly lines have style and sometimes more accurately reflect natural objects. This week we began our nature unit and ventured outside to make temporary art with natural materials such as sticks, leaves and acorns.
Third grade is finishing up dot paintings inspired by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. Students filled an entire page with dots using a new drawing tool- a compass. Then we painted each dot with a uniquely mixed color. This is also 3rd grade’s first year taking on more responsibility in the art room. Each student takes turns being a Table Leader to assist with the set up and clean up process with paint, brushes, and water.
Fourth graders are finishing up identity hand paintings and Fifth grade their monotone paintings. These paintings showcase personal interests and lives of each student as well as applied paint mixing techniques.
Fifth Grade Only
The yearbook cover design contest is underway! See Mrs. Karr for the entry form requirements and details. Designs are due no later than Friday November 21st, 2025 and the winning design(s) will be announced soon after.

Attendance Procedures
Pursuant to House Bill 410, student attendance is calculated in hours. This includes absences that have been identified as both excused and unexcused by the school, as well as planned absences. Being late or tardy to school does calculate into the total hours absent.
If your child is going to be absent for any portion of the school day, please notify the school. You may report an absence by using our Online Absence Reporting available in the Parent Portal in Infinite Campus. To enter a request follow these simple steps:
1.Log in to your Infinite Campus Parent Portal account.
2. Select your child’s profile.
3. Navigate to the Absence Request section.
4. Fill in the required information, including the date and reason for the absence.
5. Submit your request.
You will be able to view the status of your request using the View Requests button.
You may also call Chapelfield at 614-478-5575 or email our secretary at gilzows@gjps.org.
Medical excuses from a doctor can be submitted to Stephanie Gilzow, our school secretary, through email (gilzows@gjps.org) or sending in a paper copy.
Parent Phone calls to change transportation
The front office is a busy place the last 30 minutes of school. We ask that parents NOT CALL to make transportation changes after 2 p.m. Please make sure students know your plan of pick up before they come to school.
