Message from Nicole Pease Principal Message from Nicole Pease Principal

Hello everyone, I hope you are all staying warm, and that the temps change for next week! It has been tough seeing all the amazing snow outside and it being too cold outside for us to be out in it. The students do love indoor recess but not for a full week! It is hard to believe that February is on our doorstep, but it is a month filled with kindness, love, and giving! We are looking forward to collecting 100 items to donate (thanks to Deb Lang for coordinating)! Have a lovely weekend, Nicole

3/4/5th grade Team with Mrs. Quinn and Mrs. Garland 3/4/5th grade Team with Mrs. Quinn and Mrs. Garland

The students are enjoying their special projects! For Social/Emotional Learning, both classes continue to learn with Ms. Gregg about being a good friend and standing up for others.

During Language Arts, the third graders are working on defining and identifying rhyme schemes and other poetry elements using Judith Viorst’s poem "Mother Doesn’t Want a Dog" and other famous historical children’s poems. Writing opinion paragraphs using the writing process was super fun, trying to convince the reader to have a dog or a snake as a pet. With Pam Bator, the class wrote individual poems using the “I am from...” format, based on the Kentucky author George Ella Lyon. The poems beautifully depict each child’s character and personality! Thank you, Pam, for all the support you offer our fortunate classes!

Across the hall, fourth and fifth-graders are finishing up their biography research project. During their research, a text-feature scavenger hunt and over 100 text features were found! The students created cloth puppets to depict the character from their research project.

In Math, third graders are in the middle of their unit on interpreting descriptions, diagrams, and expressions that represent division situations. They have loved creating posters to demonstrate different mathematical situations, then having a gallery walk to provide peer feedback. While the fourth graders have been busy ordering and comparing decimals. At the same time, the fifth graders are focusing on multiplying fractions.

Be sure to ask your fourth or fifth-grader to share what they learned in their turtle research project with you!

Grades 1 and 2 with Heather Fletcher Grades 1 and 2 with Heather Fletcher

While it’s been chilly outside, our classroom has felt warm and cozy! Students have been writing business letters and drawing pictures to stuffed animal companies, asking for donations for our local first responders. We talked about how comforting it would be to receive a stuffed animal during an emergency. Our local police and fire departments do this for children in need! We learned that the Fire Department gives out dalmatian stuffies, while the police have many different kinds. Students have also generously donated some of their own stuffed animals, and it’s been so special to watch our pile grow. We know these stuffies will pass along the love and comfort they’ve been shown. If you’d like to donate, please send a clean stuffy in great shape (no batteries and under 12 inches).

In CKLA, we have been learning about rural, suburban, and urban communities and how they connect to our country and world geography. Second graders are wrapping up opinion writing, while first graders are working on narrative writing. First graders have loved reading Gran and are already excited about their new book, Fables. These stories have been wonderful for building fluency and comprehension skills.

With all this cold weather, we’re doing a fun science experiment with balloons, water, and food coloring! We hope to see you at Community Lunch on Friday and can’t wait to share some colorful ice outside—stay tuned!

Kindergarten with Mrs. Lang Kindergarten with Mrs. Lang

In kindergarten we recently learned about Martin Luther King Jr. and talked about using words to solve problems just as he did. Students enjoyed creating a peace sign craft and also learned about melanin as being the substance in our body that determines the color of our skin, hair and eyes. We read Whoever You Are by Mem Fox (a must read) and explored how we are the same and different.

In math, we’ve been having fun breaking numbers apart and putting them back together as we practice decomposing numbers. For example, 8= 4+4, 6+2 or 1+7.

In literacy, we continued diving into stories by identifying the characters, setting, and what happens at the beginning, middle, and end.

We’re also excited to kick off our food drive next week as we work together to help our local food pantry and show kindness and caring in our community!

Art with Justin Bentley-Melle Art with Justin Bentley-Melle

This week our DCS students were inspired by Jim Dine’s gestural heart paintings. Students experimented with expressive pattern making and stenciling. They used the contrast of warm and cool colors to strengthen emphasis. We are delighted to see so many vibrant paintings.
