Mustang Family,

We have packed a lot into a very short week! It has been great to see the school spirit surrounding Branding Iron Week. For those joining us at the game tonight, we look forward to a fun and exciting evening filled with Mustang Pride and positive sportsmanship.

School spirit is an important part of feeling connected to our school community, and with that connection comes greater engagement both in and out of the classroom. I encourage you to talk with your student about finding ways to get involved, and this week’s Club Rush provides the perfect opportunity. During lunch each day, WHS clubs will fill the center of campus, giving students the chance to explore their interests, meet new people, and find a club or organization that is right for them.

Finally, Homecoming festivities are just around the corner, and tickets for the Homecoming Dance are now on sale through ASB. We encourage students to purchase their tickets early, as prices will increase as we get closer to the event. We are looking forward to all the fun and excitement that comes with Homecoming at WHS!

Go Mustangs 🐎💙💛💙🐎!

My best,

Mrs. Jamie G. Norell

WHS Pays Tribute on 25th Anniversary of 9/11

The Walnut High School community once again came together to remember, reflect, and honor the lives forever changed by the events of September 11, 2001.

On Thursday, September 10, Social Science students placed nearly 3,000 American flags across the school’s front lawn, creating a powerful 20-foot-tall “9/11” and Pentagon-shaped memorial in recognition of the 25th anniversary of 9/11. With care and respect, our Mustangs placed each 4-by-6-inch flag into the grass to honor every life lost in the September 11 attacks.

The memorial is more than a display—it is a meaningful tradition that gives students an opportunity to pause, learn, remember, and honor the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives in the deadliest terrorist attack on U.S. soil. Through this experience, students reflect on the first responders, military personnel, survivors, families, and communities whose lives were forever impacted by the events of that day.

We are especially grateful to our Social Science teachers, Ms. Andrea DeAntonio-Takahashi, Mr. Brett Landis, Mr. Justin Panililio, Mr. Andy Perez, and Mr. Robert Sandoval, who have guided students in creating this special memorial. Their dedication ensures that the lessons of September 11—and the importance of remembering those we lost—continue to be passed from one generation of students to the next.

As part of this year’s reflection, many students selected a biography from The New York Times Portraits 9/11/2001 about one of the individuals who lost their life on 9/11. Students then reflected on that person’s life and story, writing about how learning about their experiences touched and impacted them personally. This activity encouraged students to look beyond a number and remember the individual lives and stories behind the tragedy.

We are proud of our Walnut High School students for coming together since 2011 to create this annual flag memorial, honoring the victims of 9/11 and providing a meaningful opportunity for our entire community to reflect and remember the loss and heroic sacrifice of that day 25 years ago.

September 11th | Branding Iron Game

On September 11th we will host The Branding Iron football game. This competition started with football my junior year in high school here at WHS and I vividly remember going out to take part in the coin flip my senior year. To say the history of this game is something special would be an understatement. Below is information on the history of this competition as well as information on the Chuckwagon, how to purchase game tickets, and how students can take part in the fun. I understand, more than most, the desire to come out victorious, but as Mustangs we will do that with class and honor. So remember Mustangs, we will support our teams, but we will not take part in any unsportsmanlike activities. Now let's go get that win and Go Mustangs!
