Director Castillo

James John ES Families,

We have a lengthy newsletter this week as well. I will keep my part short and highlight a few key items coming up.

Next week we will be conducting a Lockdown Drill, while it is a drill, it can be quite frightening for students. As much as it pains me to ask, please help us by reminding your child that we will be practicing a lockdown drill and that it is to ensure we all know what to do in case of a real emergency.

Friday is our Walk and Roll gathering at the St. John’s Community Center, see there at 7:45 am so we can walk and roll to school.

URGENT: The St. John Community Center is under threat of being shut down! Please read this week’s PTA News!

Continue reading, this week’s newsletter is full of information.

With Much Appreciation,

Mr. Castillo

Parent Reminders for our return to school after Spring Break and the rest of this school year.

Breakfast

  • Breakfast begins at 7:45 am and is served until 8:00 am. Please drop off students on time for breakfast. The entrance for breakfast is located at the back entrance of our school - off the corner of John St and Kellogg St. which we will also be using more this year as a drop off zone. (refer to our circulation map guidance)

  • Please remind your young scholar/s that breakfast is eaten in the cafeteria and when they are done, their scraps are thrown away in the cafeteria trash bins, food is not taken to class - it invites too many critters and we do not want that :)

Late Arrivals and Early Pick up

  • Teachers begin the academic day at 8:00 am sharp.

  • All parents must report to the office to check in their child for late arrival and early pick up. Students are not to be dropped off by classroom doors or picked up early without informing the front office. Please call the office should a change occur for drop off or pick-up.

Wellness and Birthdays

  • As part of being a healthy school, we ask families to please not send students to school with: gum, sugary or fizzy drinks, chips and candy nor with family/jumbo size bags of “snacks” -examples, potato chips, Takis, Cheetos.

  • We understand that a lunch box may contain a treat, please keep the snack to a healthy option, if possible.

  • While we recognize birthdays, we do not celebrate with sugary foods, as we are designated a healthy school. Please do not send: cupcakes, cookies, soda pop, candy or gum to school with your child.

Toy vs. Tool

  • A small discreet fidget, not a “toy” can be used as a“tool” that helps students focus on their learning. Toys provide entertainment and tools help learning. Please help your child understand the difference between a tool and a toy.

Cell Phones

  • Cell phones are off and away the entire school day.

    • Any violation of this policy will result in the following actions:

      • 1st violation- Warning.

      • 2nd violation- Phone will be confiscated and turned into the office to be picked up at the end of the day by the student.

      • 3rd violation- Phone will be confiscated and parents will have to pick up the phone in the office.

    • This means that no cell phones should be out in the hallways, classrooms, bathrooms, recess or lunch room at James John Elementary.

  • If your child needs to reach you, they will report to the front office to make the call, our process keeps the front office aware of any emergency or concern.

  • Please do not call your child during the school day. Instead, please contact the Main Office at 503 -916-6266.
