Attendance and Absences
If your student is absent, excuse notes must be shared with Ms. Stephens, attendance counselor. To ensure accurate attendance records, please submit attendance excuse notes – including those from a doctor – in one of the following ways:
- Submit through Aspen Go
- Send an email to DealAttendance@k12.dc.gov
- Drop off at school (Welcome Center)
Tardy arrivals and early dismissals require a submitted excuse note. You can also reach out to teachers for information about missed assignments.
Tardy Hall
Your student's transition to middle school includes a new responsibility - being on time for each class period each day. Sixth grade students who are late for three or more class periods per week will be required to attend tardy hall on Thursday afternoons from 3:30 - 4:30 PM.
Because students are missing important instruction when they are late for class, students at 6th grade tardy hall will leverage their time to complete missed work and reflect on ways they can ensure on-time arrival moving forward. If your student qualifies for tardy hall, you will be notified by Ms. Watson, 6th grade dean, during the week of their tardy hall assignment.

WMATA Metro System Text Line
I'd like to share a resource from WMATA Transit Police that can be supportive of your student during their travel to and from school via Metro rail or bus, as well as any other time they are commuting within the system.
Using the number listed, students can submit reports to the text line anonymously, and messages will be answered by a live dispatcher. Photos can also be submitted using the instructions at the bottom of the postcard.

Teacher Announcements
English and Language Arts with Mx. Winston
Thank you to all the families who joined us for Wednesday’s Back-to-School Night! Meeting so many of you in person was a highlight of my week. 😊
On Monday, we will visit the library, where scholars will select books for their independent reading projects. Students will also receive the project guidelines and materials. The completed project is due Monday, October 19. Students should read their selected books at home as part of their nightly homework expectation of reading for at least 20 minutes.
On Tuesday, students will complete the writing portion of the Unit 1 Skills Assessment. They will read a passage and respond to multiple-choice and short-answer questions focused on characterization, point of view, and character development. No preparation outside of class is required: just a good night’s sleep and a positive mindset!
We will spend the remainder of the week reading “The Medicine Bag” by Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve, learning about figurative language, and continuing to refine our writing skills.
Lastly, please ensure that your scholar reads for at least 20 minutes each night. Consistent reading outside of class helps students build stamina, strengthen comprehension, expand their vocabulary, and grow into more confident, independent readers.
Math with Mr. Ledix
Next week, Math students will officially be sorted/switched into their appropriate class based on their iReady data. Students can expect to enter school and receive an updated only if their schedule has switched.
Math 6
In Math 6, we will continue our work with Unit 2 of Ratios, moving from the abstract representation of a double number line to ratio tables.
Math 7
In Math 7, we will be introducing students to coordinate graphing and transformations—specifically translations.
World Geography and Cultures with Ms. Wesselhoft
Next week, we will pivot from learning map skills to applying them to the theme of our unit: How can maps be used to improve a community?
Students will begin by completing a DC Atlas Scavenger Hunt, using their map skills to become more familiar with Washington, DC. We will then explore thematic maps of DC to identify patterns and issues affecting different parts of the city.
As the week continues, students will complete a DC CEA (Current Events Article) to read about and examine an existing issue in DC and consider how maps and geographic information can help us better understand community needs.
Over the weekend, students will complete a Community Profile and Map of a community they choose. They will identify important community assets, characteristics, and areas of need. This work will prepare students to think more deeply about how maps can be used as tools to understand communities and propose improvements.
Earth and Space Science with Ms. Sagan
Hello scientists!
You all did a fantastic job exploring the scientific method through study and through demonstration with our Slime Lab – I was so impressed to see you all work out how to choose a single independent variable to alter and measure the effects on your dependent variable. Thank you for saving Slime Inc from bankruptcy!
Next week on Monday September 21st, students will complete their Scientific Method Post-Test. This is the same assignment as the Scientific Method Pre-Test, except that this one is graded. As this is the students' first assessment-level grade, we are emphasizing studying and preparedness as much as possible. Once the Scientific Method Post-Test is done, we will begin Unit 1: Plate Motion with an exploration of the laws of relative rock dating.
Blooket: How to Use
Blooket is a website where users can upload multiple choice questions for the site to turn into fun study games. I will post links to Blooket sets made by the Deal 6th grade science team before summatives to encourage students to study on their own, so please help this goal by checking in with your student to ensure that they are studying to the best of their ability.
