Message from Principal Sheryll Orbase
Dear Rose City Park Families,
As I write my final newsletter for the 2025-2026 school year, I am filled with gratitude for all that our students, staff, and families have accomplished together. This year brought meaningful growth across our school community.
Our students demonstrated significant growth in mathematics this year. Students meeting or exceeding grade-level expectations increased from 27% in the fall to 60% in the spring, while the percentage of students performing significantly below grade level decreased substantially. This growth reflects the hard work of our students, the dedication of our teachers, and our continued focus on high-quality mathematics instruction.
We also continued investing in innovative teaching and learning. Through a $15,000 grant, we secured a new Foundational Skills curriculum for our Vietnamese Dual Language Immersion (VDLI) program. In addition, every VDLI teacher participated in Project-Based Learning (PBL) training, and each grade level launched a PBL unit. A strong immersion program is built on using language, not just studying it. Project-Based Learning provides students with meaningful opportunities to speak, read, write, and think in Vietnamese while engaging in authentic, real-world learning experiences.
Supporting instruction remained a priority throughout the year. I conducted 134 classroom observations, including 72 instructional walkthroughs, 36 informal observations, and 26 formal observations. These visits allowed me to celebrate effective practices, provide coaching and feedback, support teacher growth, and stay closely connected to student learning across our school.
We also strengthened communication with families by establishing twice-monthly classroom newsletters across all grade levels, ensuring families had regular insight into student learning and classroom experiences.
Regular attendance remains one of the strongest predictors of student success. This year, 79% of our students maintained good or acceptable attendance, helping them stay connected to learning and their school community. We will continue partnering with families to ensure every student has the opportunity to attend school consistently and achieve their full potential.
Our student leaders took on expanded roles throughout the year, hosting the Tet Assembly and talent show, teaching PBIS expectations, leading school tours, and advocating for our SUN program. Their leadership, confidence, and commitment to our community were inspiring to witness and reminded us of the incredible potential within our students.
I am also excited to share some wonderful news. Yesterday, Multnomah County approved funding for the SUN program, ensuring that Rose City Park will continue to offer SUN programming this summer and throughout the 2026-2027 school year. This outcome reflects the power of student voice, family advocacy, community partnership, and collective action. We are grateful to everyone who shared their stories, attended meetings, spoke at public hearings, and advocated alongside us to preserve this important resource for our students and families.
This year also brought many moments worth celebrating beyond the data.
Congratulations to our Chess Team, whose hard work, strategic thinking, and sportsmanship represented our school with pride. Their accomplishments demonstrate the perseverance, focus, and problem-solving skills that help students succeed both in competition and in the classroom. For more details and photos, see below.
As we celebrate this year's accomplishments, we also extend our heartfelt gratitude to Ms. Broadwell, Ms. McVicar, Ms. Shelby, and Ms. Megan F as they begin new chapters at other schools. Each has made meaningful contributions to our students, families, and school community, and their dedication and care have left a lasting impact. We thank them for all they have given to our school. They will always remain an important part of our school story.
As a woman of color beginning my first year as principal, there were moments that challenged me and tested my resolve. Leading in a new community required courage, resilience, and faith in the work, even when the path was not always easy. Yet when I look back on this year, I do not remember the challenges first. I remember where I found my strength.
I found it in our staff. They are hardworking, compassionate, and relentlessly dedicated to children. Every day, they lead with professionalism, heart, and grace. Their support of students, families, colleagues, and me has been one of the greatest blessings of this first year.
I found it in our students. I watched them overcome challenges, pass difficult math and reading assessments, improve their behavior, present their project to an audience and grow into confident leaders. Their resilience and determination reminded me that growth is always possible.
I found it in our families. From words of encouragement in the hallway or school events to messages of support, many parents reminded me why partnership matters. Alongside grandparents, stepparents, and caregivers, they trusted us with their children and worked with us to help them succeed.
This year reminded me that the true strength of a school is found not only in its accomplishments, but in the people who choose encouragement, partnership, and grace.
While challenges may test us, kindness sustains us.
I saw that kindness every day in our students, staff, and families, and I am deeply grateful for the privilege of serving this community during my first year as principal.
Thank you for a wonderful year.

🏁 RCP Chess Team Update 🏁
This past weekend at the Oregon Scholastic Chess Federation (OSCF) State CoEd Team Championship, our players showed immense discipline and emotional resilience, earning fantastic final standings:
Rose City Park Elementary School: 1st Place (K-5 Reserve Section)
Roseway Heights Middle School: 3rd Place (K-8 Reserve Section)
Out of our 10 total competitors across both schools, 9 are currently in the Vietnamese Dual Language Immersion (VDLI) program and have been practicing together since that very first year.
More than the final standings, we are incredibly proud of the quiet courage, focus, and personal development these kids have shown. They represented our school community beautifully. Chess is just the vehicle, their growth is the destination.
Thank you for your continued support of our students and their extracurricular activities!
If students are interested in practicing or learning chess during summer, feel free to reach out to Tri To (bluesc13@gmail.com) or Triet Nguyen (ntriet@gmail.com), we might have some opportunities coming up for our students during summer.
