New Community Champion Competition
We have received a call for help. We will begin this competition on
November 3rd and run it until December 9th. Here is the information:
Emma’s Closet has been serving our foster families for seven
years. Every day, foster families open their homes – and their hearts
– to children in need. At Emma’s Closet, we ensure they don’t do it
empty handed. The goal and vision of Emma’s Closet is to serve and
support the foster families of Lea County through the provision of
basic necessities for children placed in their homes.
Recess Equipment Change
Dear 4th and 5th Grade Parents,
To help keep our recess equipment safe and on school grounds, students will no longer be allowed to bring their own balls to school for recess. We have had several balls kicked or thrown onto the roof, over fences, and into areas where they are difficult or unsafe to retrieve. Moving forward, the school will provide all recess balls, including footballs, soccer balls, basketballs, 4-square balls, and other utility balls.
Thank you for your understanding and for helping us keep recess safe, fun, and organized for everyone!
Thank you,
Yarbro Administration

School Dress Code
STUDENT DRESS CODE
The Lovington Municipal Schools recognize that parents are primarily responsible for students' dress and general appearance. However, student behavior and academic expectations are influenced by dress and grooming. Therefore, the following requirements for student dress District-wide (Pre-kindergarten through grade twelve [PK-12]) shall be based upon the following principles:
• Clothing shall be designed, constructed, and worn in a proper manner and shall not be vulgar, indecent, or suggestive.
• Clothing or attire that is vulgar or depicts indecent slogans, pictures/graphics, or phrases that may depict a sexual meaning or illegal substance, including gang affiliation, will not be permitted. This includes but is not limited to bracelets or shirts with phrases that depict "gender-specific anatomy."
• The general appearance of the student and his/her clothing shall not interfere with the instructional program.
• Clothing and general appearance of the student shall not constitute a health or safety hazard.
• Cleanliness of body and clothing will be expected of all students.
• The hair shall be clean and well-groomed.
• Make-up and hair shall be worn in a fashion that is not disruptive to the educational process.
• Skirts or shorts shall not be higher than six inches (6") from the top of the knee (as a student bends his or her knee on a chair). Pants with holes in them higher than the required six (6)-inch limit shall have leggings underneath. Leggings/tights shall be permitted if the garment over the leggings covers both the front and back of the student's pelvic girdle.
• Appropriate footwear shall be part of regular attire.
• Students shall not wear chains which are designed to be worn on wallets, pants, or as dog collars, including collars with spikes.
• Body piercing will be allowed, with the exception of gauging or bars, provided they do not create a distraction or safety hazard.
• Pants shall be appropriately sized at the waistband and shall be worn above the hip bones. Sagging pants or shorts worn below the waist are prohibited.
• Belts must be the appropriate length and shall be contained in belt loops. The tip of the belt may not hang unless it does not reach the next loop.
• Pajamas or sleepwear shall not be worn. (No house shoes)
• Sunglasses shall not be permitted in the buildings without a medical note filed in the principal's office.
• Sleeveless shirts shall be at least two inches (2") at the top of the shoulder. A bare midriff is prohibited. Tops/shirts shall be of sufficient length to cover the top of the pants, shorts, and skirts, even while sitting. The neck opening on any type of shirt may not exceed the equivalent of the second button below the collar of a dress shirt. Undershirts are required for any see-through, low-cut neck or arm opening, tank top, shirt, or blouse. Basketball jersey-type shirts shall not be worn unless a one-quarter (1/4) sleeve tee shirt is worn underneath.
• Hair and facial hair shall be kept neat, clean, and well-groomed. Beards and mustaches shall be kept well-shaped.
There will be certain days during the school year that will allow for dress attire other than what is addressed in the dress code. These dates will be announced.
On certain occasions, a more stringent dress code may be enforced. For example, shorts will not be acceptable at special events such as graduation, awards ceremonies, installations, or other events so determined by the administration and/or activity sponsor. Also, Prom is a semi-formal occasion that requires special dress.
Failure to follow the dress code as written above will cause the student(s) to be assigned disciplinary consequences by an administrator. Items in violation may be confiscated. If students are sent home for dress code violations, unexcused absences will be issued for the school time missed. Repeat violators could face consequences up to expulsion from the Lovington Municipal School system.
A good way to ensure students are within dress code: students place their arms at their sides and be sure that their shorts reach past their outstretched middle finger.
Attendance Policy for Yarbro Elementary
Yarbro Elementary is committed to ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed—and regular attendance plays a major role in that success. As required by state law and School Board Policy J-0500, students are expected to attend school consistently.
To support this, our school has implemented a series of steps to address unexcused absences.
Parents/guardians will receive notifications by email and/or mail when a student reaches 3, 5, or 7 unexcused absences in any class. At 10 unexcused absences per semester, the Attendance Team will schedule a conference with the parent/guardian to address how to best support the student and their attendance.
If a student reaches 15 or more unexcused absences, additional interventions are triggered, including referrals to outside agencies (JPO, CYFD, EngageNM) and a home visit by the Attendance Officer.
Parties and Celebrations
All class parties will take place in the last hour of a school day.
Your student's teacher will inform you of those days.
If you want to celebrate a student's birthday, please let the teacher know 1 week in advance so they can plan accordingly. Remember, all items for the birthday must be dropped off in the morning as we do not accept deliveries throughout the day. NO BALLOONS WILL BE ALLOWED DUE TO ALLERGY CONCERNS.
All treats must be store-bought and please consider possible student allergens.
Weather Updates
It is that time of year. Temperatures are ranging from high heat to cold, rainy days. Please make sure your student is dressed for the weather ahead each day! For weather updates, please be sure to follow the district ParentSquare messages regarding any changes to schedules or daily release. Here at Yarbro, we will follow District procedures for high and low temps and lightning events.
Use of Electronics Policy - J-3150 (State Law)
Parents our district has an electronics policy in the student handbook that includes cell phones, headphones and smart watches. Please take a few minutes to review the handbook on the district website under Students and Student Handbook. School policy is in alignment with state law J-3150.
Starting this school year, students will be expected to turn their cell phones off and place them in phone caddies in their homeroom teacher's classroom. They will be able to pick them back up at the end of the school day or when they are checked out of school for the day.

Critical Thinking
Our Portrait of a Wildcat trait for November is critical thinking. Critical thinking is like being a brain detective: instead of just guessing or believing the first thing you hear, you stop, ask good questions, and look for real proof.
