Supporting your student's post-secondary planning
It's completely normal for students to be unsure about what lies ahead! High school gives them time to explore options, build confidence, and grow with the support from family, teachers and staff.
Parents can help by :
- Asking open ended questions.
- Support multiple pathways: college, technical school, military, certifications or entering into the workforce.
- Encourage students to explore careers through job shadowing, assessments, volunteering or part time work.
- Remind them that plans can change and this is okay!
Attendance and Accountability Matter!
- Strong attendance and responsible behavior open doors to opportunities!
- Talk to your student about staying focused and responsible in class.
- Talk about careers minus the pressure!
- Focus on interests and strengths, not job titles.
- Normalize uncertainty. Most folks change careers multiple times.
- Share your own career journey!
- Avoid comparisons with peers or siblings.
- Celebrate effort and exploration, not just decisions.
Job Ready Tips
Email Like a Professional
Your email is often your first impression. Whether you're applying for a job, contacting a teacher, or communicating with a future employer, your email says a lot about you before anyone even meets you. TIPS:
1. Use a professional email address! Avoid catch phrases.
Acceptable: john.smith@gmail.com Avoid: JohnSmithROCKS@gmail.com
2. Read EVERY Email carefully.
Don't just skim it. Pay attention to deadlines and instructions.
3. Use a clear subject line.
A good subject line helps the recipient know exactly why you're emailing.
4. Start Professionally:
Good: Dear Mr.___________ , Hello, Good Afternoon Avoid: Hey, Yo, What's up?
5. Proof Read before you hit SEND!
Did I answer all the questions, Did I attach a file? Is my spelling/grammar correct? Did I include my name? **One small mistake can make a BIG difference.
6. End Professionally:
Good Closing: Sincerely, Thank you, Best then type your FULL NAME.
AVOID these common mistakes:
Using all Capital letters.
Sending one- word replies.
Using emojis or excessive punctuation.
Using Text abbreviations like "u", "idk" or "thx".
Forgetting to respond at all.
Before sending your next email, follow the 5 P's
